A little background. Got out for a full day of shooting from my 9.5foot little kayak. I will admit its a little cramped but it fits well on the car and is pretty stable being a wide fishing kayak. I have no problem paddling 8-10 miles in a day checking out different areas. I have a zip duffle bag that is water proof for passing boats and wake and just protection when the camera isn't being used.

All shots are hand held from the kayak with the old d7000, and a 400mm 2.8 and some with a 1.4 converter. the d7000 is a little dated and can be tough at locking on focus with difficult background, but still with a top notch lens does well.

1) Osprey nest landing

2) Least Bittern checking me out

3) Kingbird perched

4) Osprey head on

5) Tern

6) Osprey with a tiny fish

7) Little Blue Perched

8) Lilly Flower

9) Not exactly what you want to see when your in a kayak

Beautiful shots, Matthew. I totally agreed with you. Great lens and your skill did an awesome job. Love your ospreys.

Thanks Tam,

I bought the d7000 as a back up and when my D3s broke I have been using it for the past few weeks. Still waiting on the D500 to be available, but I must say going from a D800E to a D7000, left me with a lot to be desired, but I cannot wait till I get the D500 cause it will feel amazing... Haha

Thing is the 400 2.8, may be about the worst handing lens, but the images its capable of producing are not much like anything else around other than the 600 f4 and maybe the 200 f2. I feel if I am going to go through all the work of going out to do photography then I want to have the opportunity to produce photos that have maximum 3d / subject isolation impact.

Also it was a tough choice giving up longer focal distances like a 500 or a 600mm I have tried about all of them, but the 400 2.8 is about the best all around telephoto lens out of all of them for anything from sports to wildlife...

Very nice set of images! I especially like the ospreys. Glad we have no gators around here!

Great shots, especially the ones taken while your kayak was being chomped on by a gator.

luckily the gators don't chase, and I give them some room.

These are spectacular, great light and composition! You have guts taking good gear out on a kayak, but I guess that's how you get these great shots.

Wonderful images.

I'll second that. I've been trying to build up the nerve to take my 7DII and 400/5.6 out on a kayak, but haven't gotten there yet.

Would you mind sharing some details about the model of your kayak and waterproof duffle?

I use a heritage 9.5 featherlite. It's a relatively cheap kayak made for fishing. I removed the seat and fitted a small padded folding boat seat I found at Walmart. The seat was the best modification ever, it really didn't change the stability but it made it relatively comfortable for all day paddling. It required a little modification to fit but it's great.

Check out the seal line zip duffle. They are not cheap but quick easy access via a zipper is a must for equipment

Excellent all around. Love the kingbird
Pretty amazing how you handled such a heavy lens, and in a kayak!

Beautiful images, kudos, besides not having your skill, I would be too chicken with the gator around to even venture on a kayak with gear.

Great set, beautiful images, especially like #1. Thanks for the kayak info, thinking about getting one myself but will do at least one or two rental trips before committing to a purchase. I found my first trip a bit splashy, mostly off the paddle.

they are worth it, sometimes a lot of work to get all the stuff together and loaded on the car, a good paddle and more practice should take care of splashing

This post makes me a bit more confident about taking my kit out on a kayak.

The swamps around here are great for raptors but I've been a bit paranoid about sending my 7200 and 80-400 into the drink.

Waterproof zip bag you say...interesting.
