I have asked this question to Nikon but have not heard back from them yet, Does the WT-5 wireless transmitter work on the D5 without using the Nikon UT-1 Communication Unit?
I believe there is a new wireless transmitter WT-6, but is it backwards compatible?

Is have the WT-6a for the D5 and it works like a champ! High res jpegs up to an ftp in 3-5 seconds flat in crowded RF/wifi signaled stadiums.

Yes, the WT-5A works on the D5 exactly as it does on the D4.

The WT-6A has some updated specs, but also a slightly changed shape that makes it much easier to mount since it has a cutout to make room for the rubber connector cap.

I had to remove the rubber cap for it to stay seated on the camera.
