Also known as the closer-but-not-closer principle by combining 5DSR with cropping.

Much easier to find and track a BIF when it is not near to filling the frame. Also cheaper than buying a 300 f2.8, or 500 f4, or 600 f4.

Purple Martens fly about as fast and erratically as Swallows.

Edit: Same principle also works for non-BIF.

Well to a point I agree but isn't a 5DS R about $3500 I'm not saying it isn't a value but one could get a nice used 300 f/2.8 for that

So now I'm thinking go shorter on glass and longer on body
Gosh those held up well on the crops Sr T...........nice little grabs, now try dragonflies

For the life of me, I can't imagine what other thread on fredmiranda.com prompted this one

Yes, but you would still have to attach a camera to it.

Oh, so the 5DS R doesn't need a lens

Now you got it. New 5DSR - $3600 + new 100-400 II - $2100 = $5700

New 5D Mk III - $2500 + new 300 f2.8 II - $6100 = $8600

I have the 5d3 and 5dsr and find myself more and more using the 5dsr for wildlife. And now use my 7dii less often too because the cropped resolution at the same distance beats the 7dii as well.

So the 5dsr can replace two cameras - 7d2 and 5d3, with better dynamic range (vs 7dii) and better features (vs 5d3 eg timed long exposures and mirror noise is less). The only thing it lacks is a snappy response on histogram and 10fps.

I'm finding similar: own the 5DSR and 7DII and am using the 5DSR for almost everything. For BIF, I appreciate the greater FoV for tracking while still being able to crop in-camera down to 20-30 mpxl resolution with better DR than the 7DII gives. The 7DII at this point is what I'm using for air shows and similar situations where I really need fps or will shoot so many images (many throw-aways) that I'd rather deal with the 7DII's smaller files.

The 5DSR + 100-400 (II) is a terrific combo for many things. Add a TC1.4 and it's even more versatile, albeit requiring a bit more light.

I have to agree.... this is the very reason I decided my 1D4 upgrade would be a 5DSR and not a 7D2 or 1DX2...... Money was not a consideration. I thought I would miss the 10fps, but I do not 90% of the time....

BTW, I got mine as a Canon Refurb for $2900 delivered.... Deals are out there....

I also have newly subscribed to this shooting philosophy. So far I'm not missing the FPS about 90% of the time. I have missed it for ducks taking off as I know with 10+ FPS I'd have more frames to choose from. For everything else, the 5DSR is the best of both worlds....crop to 7D2 size and have a sharper file and when the subject gets closer you get so much extra detail.

#5 (House Finch) caught my eye. That is the bird photography I have been doing for the past month as the Warbler migration is in full swing here. I use a 100-400II and a 400 DOII with a 1DX for detail as the Warblers small colorful birds. I had thought the 5DSr was a waste of pixels for my needs...now you have caused me to re-think.
Thanks for posting!

When you have the choice of using or not using the extra pixels, it is not a waste of pixels.

Well, shoot. I guess I need one of these now. I've struggled keeping my shutter speed up on the 7DII, because I'm reluctant to go over 800 ISO. Guess I'll see how far my 6D and 7DII will get me.

If you nail focus on the 7DII ISO 1600-3200 is not a problem and IQ will be infinitely better than a blurred ISO 800 shot.

Still not interested in 7DII however, 2 years too late for my taste. I'll stick to 5DsR and 1DX for foreseeable future, but if I do get a cropper and there's no strong rumours of a 7DIII, I'll grab a D500 later this year. High ISO performance is excellent and vastly better DR than 7DII.

My most often used ISO on the 5DSR is 1250, next is 640. I like to keep shutter speeds pretty high.

Having 51mp provides much flexibility beyond the obvious big prints and cropability..... You also have the choice to downsample the image as a way to reduce noise..... Make an image at ISO 3200, for example, then downsample it to 20mp and all of a sudden you have the noise characteristics of a 5D3/1DX image shot at ISO 800 or thereabouts......

As of right now, IMHO, the 5DSr is the Swiss Army Knife of the Canon dSLR product line..... Unless you absolutely need 10fps or more, I see no better way as of today to spend $3k on a Canon body...

Yeah and let's not forget when you use this camera for landscape/macro etc the detail is ridiculous.

I've always said I'd rather a high MP FF than a cropper, because it gives you more flexibility.

For the 5Ds II I want to see 7fps, 0.5-1 stop improvement in noise, bigger buffer, 4K, swivel screen, 1-2 EV boost in DR, 1DXII AF. That would be unstoppable.

And some can't grasp the concept that while the body may cost more than a lower MP body, not needing a longer focal-length lens on it results in a lower cost than having to slap a 500 f4 or 600 f4 lens on a cheaper body.
