Canonrumors has the patent, which was filed in October 2014.

While the Canon lens sets the industry standard, I'm genuinely interested in seeing what Sigma can come up with, and whether they can improve on the Canon lens' performance and price in one shot!

It's going to be hard to top the Canon version for anything other than price. It's an exceptional lens.
