Hello folks,

Seem to be traveling a lot more than I expected this year as I've asked for a lot of advice on these boards much more than I expected to.

I'm heading to Northern California in mid July for a wedding and the wife didn't want to go to Yosemite again this year so we were thinking about heading up to Oregon instead. We'd likely be driving from San Francisco to Portland over a span of 3 days. Never been up there but was thinking about spending 2 days there. Open to suggestions of where to go/good photo vantage points for particular places. I'm mostly landscapes when I travel.

Places I'm thinking about:
1. Crater Lake
2. Columbia river gorge
3. Mount Hood
4. Coast for seastacks?

Thoughts or suggestions? Much appreciated . Thanks in advance!

1-4 are all good choices. But only 3 days? Just enjoy the view out the window on the freeway.

Mid July Oregon is moving into the tan phase from the green overload phase.

Crater Lake is a no-brainer if you're a landscape guy. It's not too far off your path heading north on I5 so worth the extra detour. The coast offers a huge variety of lighthouses and rock cliffs ect but maybe too far off course for you with your time frame. Best to research exactly where first and then go. Maybe head west out of Eugene, then up 101, and back east to I5 somewhere up near Lincoln city or Tillamook. The highway out of Eugene follows the river and has a lot of good turnouts. Google is your friend for coastal locations. The Gorge and Hood are close enough to Portland you can do that once you arrive. But as Tim said, July in the Gorge is going tan. Maybe Multnoma Falls or something else might intrest you instead.

Go coast (101 all the way up to Tillamook or Lincoln City) or mountains (I-5 up to Weed, then 97 up to 26) if you only have 3 days to get to Portland. Coast has tons of spots all the way up. Mountains are best at Crater Lake and Cascade Lakes highway near Bend.

yeah, you will need to choose a priority. Crater Lake is awesome, but to be honest can get old quick, and is out there by itself and will take up a whole day.

are you flying out of PDX or roundtrip from SF to PDX? I would second the PCH (101) drive and take your time. You can stop at jedediah smith state park, just south of Brookings and stay the night at either the casino south of Brookings (it is super nice btw, my wife and i stayed there last March) or there is a place in Bandon that is fantastic (I can get you the name if you want). The Oregon Coast is probably the most scenic on the US pacific (ONP is great as well). Stay another night in Cannon Beach (or PDX and visit the breweries/etc).

The Gorge will be low flow (ish) and will be CROWDED!!!!!!!!! don't fit too much into a short visit. just whet the appetite, so to speak - and make a return trip. I did that when i visited southern Utah a few years ago. Now that I live here... Have fun

Thanks for feedback so far. Think my number one priority would be Crater Lake. After that I might need to cede to the wife to see what she wants to do but think she'd like the coast.

I'm flying out of PDX and think I'll probably stay in Portland one night and then can head out in any direction the next day before coming back in.

You don't have enough time to do much other than drive the coast if you go that route. 101 traffic is really slow in July and there's a huge amount to see—mostly on turnoffs (state parks, parking/viewpoint areas, short hikes, etc.).

If you want to get out of the car at all, I'd suggest taking I-5, getting off toward Weed, up through Klamath Falls (you might have opportunities for birds at the NWRs) and to Crater. Then decide how you'll get to Portland:
1. The suggested waterfall route, 138, back to I-5 can take many hours, depending on how many falls you visit;
2. Go back to 97, maybe stop along the way at Smith Rock State Park, the Peter Skene Ogden overlook (on the west side of the road), and then up by Hood and into Portland.
3. After Crater, take 97 to 20, heading through Sisters. You can then either continue on 22 toward Salem or, just past Sisters, take scenic MacKenzie Pass (242) to 126 and decide whether to connect to I-5 in Eugene or in Salem (just look at a map).
4. Same as #2, but instead of taking 26 into Portland, continue on 97 to I-84 and stop at some of the Gorge waterfalls on your way into Portland. Note that the falls parking lots will likely be pretty full, so you may not get to see many of the falls.

If you're into birds, you could try visiting Ridgefield NWR (north of Vancouver) or Sauvie Island (near Portland) before taking off.

For Crater Lake, any suggestions for which lookout point for sunrise/sunset? Think I'll get there in time for sunset Sunday night and then be able to get up early for sunrise in the morning.

Think otherwise after Crater lake we're going to head up the coast for Thor's well, enjoy the coast and get towards Haystack Rock eventually.

TPE and/or Google Earth are your best friends here. They sure save me a lot of driving and walking to unsuitable locations.

Thor's well can be seen only under specific tide conditions and photographed only if you are willing to get soaked and take some safety precautions.Sure, give it a go, just don't be surprised if you drive past it without ever knowing it is there. Cape Perpetua is konda fun, and of course there is Bandon and Samuel Boardman State Park in that general area.
