Well, I've not been in love with the 15mm focal length since getting the 21/2.8 Lox, so the 10mm/5.6 is now a candidate - what's the overall consensus on the this lens for landscape-type work wide open to f/8 or so regarding sharpness across the frame, flare, ghosting, and sun-stars?

A quick look at some of the sample photos shows it able to make some great images.

Thanks -

John

John,
The CV 12 is better mid and edges and it's worlds different than 15mm. It was my Loxia 21 companion until I tried the FE 12-24/4...Both are flare resistant (not same level of CV 15 though). Sunstars are great but towards the edges, it gets a bit distorted.

"worlds different than the 15mm" - specifically what do you mean? FOV, sharpness, etc., etc.?

I was just referring to FOV.

Fred - are you planning on keeping the CV12 now that you have the 12-24mm?

The 12-24/4 G replaced all my ultra wide primes.

Even the Loxia 21?

Not the Loxia 21. It's my main landscape lens and I don't consider it ultra wide. It's my "normal" lens.

My landscape kit has changed a bit:

12-24/4 G, Loxia 21/2.8, Zeiss 28/2 ZF.2, CV 65/2 APO and Zeiss 100-300. (5 lenses)

I carry a breakthrough 77mm ND and C-POL for the 12-24/4G and the Lee Seven5 ProGlass (NDs and C-POL) for the other lenses (52mm, 58mm and 67mm rings). Very compact filter system set-up.

For nightscapes I will carry: Lawoa 15/2 (needs f/2.8) and Loxia 21/2.8 (great wide-open)

I'm very happy with the weight and IQ and honestly would only exchange the Distagon 28/2 ZF.2 for a Loxia 28.

@FredMiranda@ what do you think of this lineup for cityscape/architecture and landscape?

CV12, CV15, Loxia 21, Loxia 35, Loxia 85

I'm prioritizing IQ, compactness, and sun star performance.
The FE 12-24 is interesting but I would prefer the microcontrast and rendering of the CV/Loxia lineup.

All great lenses. If you like the 10-point sunstar, it's an excellent set!

Sounds like a good little kit. I like the idea of using the Seven5 system; the biggest barrier to me using filters is having them with me (due to size)! The problem for me is that it would really only suit half my lenses and the others would need 100x100 or regular screw ins.

If you have any test crops available of the ZF2 28/2 I'd be very interested to see those.

Does this mean you have returned the 16-35GM, or does it just not form part of your landscape kit?

I'm using the Loxia 21, will pick up the CV 10 soon, am using the CZ15 in Canon mount (will replace with the Laowa 15 when available in the US at Adorama / BH. I'm not ordering a lens from China that I have to ship back there if decentered).

I have actually rented the 10mm for two different trips. I really, really, really want to like this lens. It's not sharp at all in the corners. Reminds me of a bad copy of the Voigtlander 15mm. I love the small size. Love the wide view. Love the sunstars.. But the soft and smeared corners make it had to pony up the cash to buy it.

I own both the 12mm fisheye and 8mm fisheye lens from Samyang and both are significantly sharper lenses. I find using the crop sensor 8mm lens on my A7R gives me a small file but sharper image on a lens that is as small as the Voigtlander. Sure there is a little of the fisheye distortion but I would rather deal with that in post than the smeared corners.

Both fisheye Lenses are f/2.8 and make excellent night images so that is another plus for them.

So if you get the 10mm it is a unique lens but be prepared for soft corners.

I'd get the 12mm over the 10mm. Better corners

Although I absolutely love my 12-24G, I miss the CV 12 for its size and sunstar rendering.

Its true the CV 10 has fairly soft corners. The 12 is better, a good copy of the 15 better still, and the Sony zoom likely better than them all.

It does have nice sunstars though.

BUT

It's 10mm. Often when I'm travelling 10mm means amazing and interesting interior shots that you can't get with 12mm. Or architecture shots where you can't back up, and where there's enough foreground stuff happening that stitching won't work without tripod mounting and paying attention to nodal point etc.

I think of the 10 as the extreme wide I can slip into my travel kit for interiors and not notice.
Of course you could think of the 12 that way too, and it is a bit better, but it's no Loxia, and I guess I'd rather my compromised miniature hyper wide lens was as wide as can be, rather than slightly better and slightly less wide.
Of course, this is a very personal decision....

Yes, 10 is 10 and there is nothing else available for any full frame body including the SLR market.

The superior sharpness and zoom flexibility of the 12-24 was very tempting, But even more tempting, for me, is the size, sun stars, and overall rendering of the CV ultrawides. I went the CV 12mm and I love it. If the 12-24mm is sharper, and I’m not doubting it, it’s irrelevant to me because I’m happy with the CV.

Actually I owned the CV 10mm last year, but regretfully sold it. What a cool lens! In my ideal-wealth world I would own every single Loxia and every single E-mount CV lens. And between the Loxia & CV lenses, I much prefer the handling (lovely knurled focus & aperture rings) of the Voigtlanders.
