The White rim is only half way to the river in terms of elevation, but a side road takes you down to the Colorado river via Lothrop Trail Road.

This road is a 4 mile spur road and I think the only place you can reach the Colorado River from the White Rim other than hiking. It had lots of sand and was rough. I did not get as many pics of it as I wanted because I was too busy driving.

Steeper than it looks

Off camber

Nice view of the Colorado

What's up with his truck in that "off camber" shot? Was he hitting some boulders in the road or did he just pack too much stuff on the drivers side.

You have GOT to have some nice landscape shots of the Lothrop campground area. What a cool place! It must have been gorgeous to see in real life. Especially during the golden hours.

Nice!

As you can see, the road is off camber and some of that is slick rock (no dirt). So the lean is in teh raod not teh vehicle.

We did not have a camp permit this year so we just drove the trail. Started at 6:30AM finished at 5:30 PM. Avg speed less than 10 MPH. So we did not have any good light. We were so tired that we went to Moab for dinner and did not get out that evening for sunset.

I do have many landscapes from the trip but none from the White Rim Trail. We also did a hike the 3rd morning for sunrise and Green River Overllook the last morning.

Oh man, you must have been going crazy not being able to shoot those places in good light.

How did you know where to go? A trail map? Is it pretty straight forward and only one road to follow or could you get lost in there? I'd be worried of running out of gas back in there.

The trail is pretty straight forward as far as getting lost. It is well known and can be seen in most Canyonlands images from the rim above.

Shafer Trail was built by ranchers to drive cattle to Moab. Later on the White Rim trail was built for uranium mining.

I always fill up every time I am in Moab. I had about 150 miles that evening from the last fill up. No gas, no cell service in there. But there are other people so it would be rare to go 1/2 hour without seeing somebody. Mostly mountain bike riders and their escort vehicles.

Here is a shot taken along the road that is sort of artistic if you ignore it being mid day.

Rick, who is from Texas looks at the deep blue sky and says it does not look natural to him and he would tend to tone it down in Photoshop.

Our skies here in SC can be an even deeper blue than what you show here so it all depends on what the viewer is use to seeing.

I have no idea why or even IF the sky is bluer here in SC than what I remember up in NY where I lived most my life but it sure looks a lot deeper blue than anything I remember ever seeing in NY.

I think maybe what makes an image like this appear to have a super blue sky is the fact that there is very little foliage colors and it makes it stand out more. That, plus there are no clouds to break it up.
