p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · First Outing with the 1Dxll

Last night was my first outing with the 1Dxll coming from a 1Dx I can verify quicker AF acquisition without a doubt, with consistent AF tracking. Plus with the quicker frame rate I constantly saw more balls in consecutive frames than before. ISO performance was good, but I really didn't need to push that, though I did try some ISO 8k. Here are a few images to add to the thread.

Colors look good. Good to hear about the AF improvement. I'll take mine out later for some HS baseball under crappy lighting to check AF and ISO.

I like the last shot best.

Look forward to hearing your thoughts. Tomorrow I'm shooting The Orlando Pride Game WPSL I'm gonna try my 400 2.8 with 1.4ext. and see if the AF is still as responsive.

I love the pictures, ISO 8000 look good. but that did it also with the 1DX i think
did you used some noise reduction tool?

good to hear that the auto focus still is improving, even it already is amazing me a lot. do you use a 7D mkII some times? I am using a 1Dx (first edition) and my range is some times a problem. so i bought me a converter, but i do not like it that much. with a croped sensor you are already gaining range off course. I am wondering how the image quality is of the 7D mark II compaired to the 1DX and 1DXII when you are shooting 1 stop lower in ISO with the croped sensors then with the full frames.

As a new D5 owner, I can only say, hats off to Cannon. It's simply brilliant sets like this that just make me happy that we have such great equipment that in the right hands elevates us all. Nikon, Cannon, Sony -- who cares. Just keep making more pictures like these and everyone wins.

Very nice shots. But I have a question - how much of the photos we are seeing from the newer Nikon and Canon are due to the photographers' skills and how much is due to the new camera. I think that most of the photographers on this site can take a great photo with a ham sandwich, and that for many run of the mill photographers the higher iso and fps, will result in more bad pictures being taken at a higher iso and a faster fps.

As good as these machines are, isn't the person behind the lens more important?

Ruben, NR was minimal at about 26 on the ISO 8000 images, and I also shoot with the 7D ll. and I had the 1Dx original body and I'm using many of the same settings I used with the original 1Dx, but I sold that roughly 3 months ago. I can tell you that the AF and image quality on the 7D ll is not as good and constant as the original 1Dx, but its a great 2nd body for what I do , and I do enjoy the extra reach when I shoot BIF or Aviation. Not so much needed with sports since I use a 400 2.8.

Thx PureMichigen / MikalWGrss

Skill is one thing and the camera I definitely another. I think image content partly reflects the photographer. I was showing these images mostly for the camera results, Thats why the one large image of each ISO 2k and 8k were added.

I shot some WPSL yesterday. I'll post some more samples soon.

Of course, it's probably the most important thing, for both capture and processing. But, if two photographers have very similar abilities, then bodies and glass will make a difference if one has the best and one doesn't. This becomes even more evident under bad lighting. And in the dog-eat-dog world of sports shooting where the pros are trying to sell their images and competing against other very good shooters, any advantage is most welcome. Like ISO, shutter speed and aperture are equally important to the image, pros need ability, equipment and access. A weakness in any of these can compromise image quality.

Tim, I agree 100%. I forgot about the competitive edge that the equipment can give. Thanks for reminding me.
