I learned this method, gave a good result:

https://www.gimp.org/tutorials/Smart_Sharpening/

Any idea how it compares to various plug-ins, etc.? Channels and compose/decompose had changed, though, as far as getting to them, if you want to try. Really wasn't that hard, once I figured it out. Need to experiment with the mask more.

That is interesting. I'll check it out. I use this which is also an edge sharpening method. I think PhotoKit sharpener is edge sharpening.

Look up the Wavelet Sharpening plugin for GIMP. I find it does quite well with small radius and low 'amount' settings.

I use vanilla Unsharp Mask in Gimp, albeit with hand-tuning for each pic. Am I missing something?

I would definitely recommend trying the method in my post above. The problem I was having on one image of a bird was that usm was causing noise in the smooth, oof, bg, where nothing needed sharpening, anyway.

The method above just sharpens the luminance channel, which is apparently better, and you create a mask and just sharpen where needed. So you have less/no noise to deal with in oof areas.

Took about 5 minutes or less, when I've timed it, so its not that much work, really, once you've done it 2-3 times. Of course, you can play with it longer.

Okay, that sounds plausible so I'll give it a spin.
