When i bough my d500 I also bought the Hoodman H-EYEN22R eyecup. I Use them on all of my cameras and was glad to see that the D500 shared the same Round eyepiece. I could not get the Hoodman to thread into the camera. I called Hoodman Customer service and discussed the issue with them. They are checking the issue. I went into my drawer of spare parts and tried to tread 4 factory eyepieces from my D3S and none of them would thread either. It seems to me that the thread pitch is different. Has anyone else had this issue?
Hoodman must have sent you the eyepiece geared to the Southern Hemisphere which would screw in in the opposite direction. Just like hurricanes, typhoons and water swirling out of the bathtub.
Good to know, the little eye piece comes right off so you may like that if you wear glasses. Also good to know, it comes right off whether you intend to or not

Not sure about a Hoodman, but I used the same round rubber eye cup I used on my D3 on the D500 and it fit fine.
This is probably widely known by all of you.. but one of the differences between the D3s models and moving forward is -- you must lock the eye piece shield closed prior to unscrewing either the plain glass (OEM) or, anything else from that eye piece socket.
The blind (when open) locks that thread from becoming usable.
