At last managed to get a free morning away from wedding preperations/decorating to go on a bug hunt

Whixall moss in shropshire was the destination and along the canal loads of miner bees and a few Nomadas were feed8ing on the dandys .
Using 5dsr & mpe-65 managed a load of images , a first real go with this body for macro , it is superb!

5 frame focus stack . f7

First one for me. Great composition, colors and sharpness!

May I ask you what your flash settings were (Manual/ ETTL? High speed sync/ Rear curtain sync/ Full flash?) and whether you used a tripod or not? Have you tried handheld?

The reason why I ask:

Hi Phil I Always shoot hand held , never use a tripod for macro .
I used av mode, ettl flash full power on 430 ex , fixed 200th flash synq on camera .home made diffuser .
Finding the 5dsr much better than my old 5d mk2 , sensor picks up more background light in comparison I have noticed .
Have over 300 frames to sort through , both single frames & stacks .

Nice set Phil

Highlights look a little hot. Are you using a new flash or diffuser?

I know John both pics are a bit bright overall, had PS set for printing profile & forgot to uncheck paper simulation. My Normal flash /diffuser combo
On these shots at this shooting angle I noticed some bright highlights that are not on other images I shot, thought initially maybe some water on this bees face reflecting the flash . Will see what the other images are like of this bee shot facing opposite direction .

It's really easy to get robbed by the angle between the diffuser, subject, and sensor when shooting against compound eyes. They're a lot more reflective than you might think, and the angle bites me sometimes as well.

Phil,

Very nice. I have not seen any pollen-eating yet this year. The current hot weather seems to have kept most insects away and it is due to get hotter.
