p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · white blotches on photo

Attached is a photo of a water polo player that shows white blotches in the photo. It was the only one of the several hundred shot over the weekend that had the white blotches on it. This was shot on an overcast day.

Today I shot a swim meet and the white blotches appeared on the swimmer for three photos in a row. That photo is the second photo. This was shot in the bright sun of Islamorada, FL.

I know that there was no water on the lenses, so the blotches cannot be water spots.

Both photos were unretouched except to resize them and save them as jpegs for posting here.

I shoot with a Sony a900, a Sony 70-200/2.8 G, and a San Disk ultra 16gb card. There is some coating missing on the exterior of the lens, but the glass near the mount is flawless. Could this be causing the blotching / white spotting? If so, why don't the white blotches / spotting appear in more or all of the photos?

I shot many shots from the same angle and direction, and these are the only photos that appeared this way.

Can someone assist me in getting to the bottom of what is causing the white blotches?

Thank you.

Mikal

I've seen "splotches" like that when the sun catches water drops from splashes that are well out of the plane of focus. That would account for them only appearing in some, but not all of your photos.
This is a bit of an extreme example, but i think it shows what I mean.

I think Neddie has it right, it is water splashes that catches the light

Can also be water drops on the lens itself. I wouldn't worry. If you get the same blotches shooting snakes in a hot desert sun, then I'd worry.

Agree with above. Take a few shots out back . . .see if they are there. If so check the lens (both ends) and the mirror.

Thank you. There was no water on the lens because I was sufficiently far from the action that no water would or could have splashed on the lens.

I really hope it is nothing more than what you are saying it is.

Thank you again.

... Moisture and light ... high intensity light + high humidity (spotty light mist), just the right angle ... nothing to worry about ... move around when you shoot, different shot positions ...

I was kind of hoping it was serious enough to warrant buying a new camera. Bummer. My wife thanks all of you.

Of course you need a new camera! Don't let a bunch of strangers talk you out of that.
