p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Comparison of lenses with Teleconverters

Just for fun, I thought I'd see how Canon lenses hold up against similar Nikon lenses when used with Teleconverters. There was some discussion on a recent post about overall comparisons and I've always been underwhelmed with Nikon lenses using converters so I did a few comparisons. Check out the links below. They speak for themselves.

300mm with 2X

And just for fun, since we all "know" Canon's wide angle lenses aren't as good as Nikon. How about the 11-24 compared to the nikon 14-24 at 14, with the nikon closed down to f4 which will give an advantage to the Nikkor.

Looks pretty clear cut to me.

To be fair to Nikon, the comparisons of the 500 and 600 are using Nikon's old versions. I'm sure their new E versions would be much, much better. Even the Nikon 300 which hasn't been updated to the E version is the older version and not the current Mk II version.

That said, I've never read good things about Nikons 2xTC. Seems not many use it compared to how many make good use out of Canon's 2xTC.

Thats why I shoot canon - for the lens. Nikon does not even have a ts17 which is my most used lens.

But the 5dsr with the 600v2 at 2x is impressive too in the center:

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=748&Camera=979&Sample=0&FLI=2&API=0&LensComp=654&CameraComp=614&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=3&APIComp=2

But in the end - the differences in the field are more likely do to technique than the differences noticed above except for the TS17

Always loved my Canon 400mm 2.8L II non-IS with 1.4x and 2x TCs. Even worked great with the 2x TC + Kenko 1.4x TC! 1456mm FOV equivalent on a 1D4 was insane

Have any details regarding your testing process? Live View AF or viewfinder?

He posted links to specific selections with the Lens Image Quality comparison tool at The Digital Picture (TDP),

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx

I'm not sure about details of the technical procedures, but it's probably described somewhere on TDP. I haven't seen it.

Thank you for assembling that info, Joe. Interesting stuff.
It is those very lenses which have kept me in the Canon camp for years.
Never had one of them fail, never let me down, from humble 50mm f/1.8 MkI to the flagship 800.
(400 DO MkI is kinda special case)

I've always thought that Nikon TC's were the weak link rather than the lenses. There may be a little of each. Their new pro level lenses are very good, and a bit pricey.

These images speak for themselves and even the Canon series I supers are significantly better.
The CA in those images shows why Canon uses pure Flourite and how it pays dividends.
For all the songs and dances about DR I'll take better lenses EVERY DAY over the ability to heavily process a file.
It seems the D5's AF is not all its cracked up to be from the Fro's review as well shooting in stadium lighting etc.
Lenses and AF are the two big ticket items that mean way more than 20 stops of over processed unnatural lighting..

+1 @ Glass rules.

Old school was buy the best glass you could afford and shoot it on the best film for the task.

Imo, today's multitude of camera body / sensor choices have become the equivalent to the same decisions we used to make about film. Only now, we are looking @ pixel density instead of grain size, etc ... still a size of capture relative to response relative to structure and diff MFRs profile sensors differently, not all that much diff from having to make film choices about profiles of film.

Too bad we can't change out sensors the way we could change out film.

The good news is that the glass vs sensor worlds continue to get better on both ends. One gets updated much less frequently, and can be decades before reaching obsolescence. The other has a different story.

Two diff strategies @ which basket you put your eggs for the long haul, but the value of good glass has its place. Which DR profiles we shoot them on kinda takes me back to the positive vs reversal debates of yore. There was no perfect film then, and no perfect sensor now ... Just intensely preferred ones depending on the shooter and the task.

It's well-known that my favorite lens review site hates nikon lenses, and smears jelly on them before testing!

IMO Canon lenses have gone way ahead of their cameras in terms of IQ and performance. (On top of that, good lenses depreciate little over time, whereas dSLR cameras resale value tanks relatively fast regardless of their new price. However, that is a different topic.)

In just about all shooting scenarios, I am limited by the camera, not the lens.
The key problems with all of my cameras are (1) failure to focus/track a moving target (2) insufficient resolution and (3) image file noise.
If a camera has adequate resolution, then it has poor high ISO noise performance, or can't focus worth of beans. If ISO noise happens to be low, then the resolution is low.

Agree with you on all counts. I think my Canon 180 Macro has seen a dozen cameras come and go.
