a lot of talk about xqd, cf cards with the nikon d5/d500. trying to figure why do you need to shoot 200 frames at a time. i shoot my kids ski racing and its about 6~7 frames at a time, shooting soccer and tennis may be 6~10 frames till the action has moved on. so people who shoot 200 or need that much? what do you shoot? BIF interested to know about situations where u need to shoot that much

Don't ask me. I'm still shooting 4x5 a lot. My burst rate is 2 frames per fifteen minutes.

Usually with perched birds I shoot 2-3 at a time, for BIF though it can be many more as I try to get the perfect wing position, so yes I'll be taking advantage of the D500's 10 fps and that maybe well end up being 40-50 frames for a rare or spectacular BIF.

When I shoot gymnastics or dance I can shoot max FPS 5-10 frames, but the moments are any where 2-5" apart and continuous moments thru a 90" or 500" long routine do the math, lots of frames. At times when I know the routine inside and out I have tried going single shot method, still feel bursts work better. You can never have too many FPS or an infinite buffer 😀

Quick answer: Almost nobody needs to shoot 200 frames continuosly. Basically, with the right card, Nikon has removed the buffer limit completely. The camera writes as quick as you can shoot. That is the point, no need to worry about the buffer. The 200 limit is to protect the innards.

Wildlife action. I maxed out the D500 buffer last Saturday when a fight broke out between THREE immature Bald Eagles. Of course the good stuff happened much further away from me but still nice I was not sitting waiting for my buffer to catch up. Love my D810 but I have missed many wildlife action shots using it.

A motor drive that swaps out those sheet film holders for you might help, but it probably wouldn't easily fit in your backpack

I love fast and long burst (wildlife/birds and sport/action).
Sometimes, 200 shots in a burst are not enough for me. Today, after a few hours at a local air show:

Great point, air shows demand serious buffers. I thought I was cool with 4k clicks so far but looks like I've been beat.

After so many fine cameras over the ages slowing down because the buffer filled up (the Canon 1Dx MK I as little as 38 RAW frames) it was a relief when the D4/D4s/D5 buffers became so large I could never fill one up.

As to burst length: three frames was my minimum (at max fps) when squeezing the shutter to avoid shaking the camera. Now with the 12 fps of the D5 it's more likely 4 frames. At the lower shutter speeds I have to often use one or more of those frames often has motion blur. So the burst is valuable.
Ditto for other animate situations such as a group of people-some one is always blinking or grimacing.
