p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · D750 or D810 for London and Paris Trip

I own both bodies and can only take one.
There is concern with the d810 and low light situations.
I have been having best results with the d810 at higher shutter speeds and
the d750 is more forgiving with indoor shooting with limited light and no flash.

I really prefer the d810 images but concerned about missing the shot with it
being a bit more unforgiving.

My walk around lens choice I own at the moment and deciding which would
be best is the Sigma 24-105 f/4 or Nikon 24-120 f/4.

Any thoughts and suggestions from experience is appreciated

D750, without doubt. D810 is best used on tripod, and if you want to make very big enlargements. I've been using a d800E and it sucks for use in crowded urban areas. I'm going back to using a D5300 for that. I know I will never carry something like a D800e around downtown Chicago again.

I concur especially since you may also experience gloomy and rainy weather so you may never need 1/8000 shutter speed outside especially with those lenses!

Why did it suck in a crowded urban area?

I'm afraid I wouldn't agree with the statement that the D810 is better used on a tripod. I rarely put mine on a tripod. I shoot everything with it, including bands in fairly dark clubs frequently. I do use fast lenses.

That said, if you are worried about shooting in low light, and not taking fast lenses, the D750 may be a bit better in those situations. Me - I just love what the D810 produces, wouldn't trade it - maybe there'd be a few you miss, but you'd get so many glorious ones.

Last October we went to Rome and London - took my D800E with the 24-120/4. What a fantastic combination! Outdoor shots were, obviously, great, but the indoor shots were stunning as well. Hand-held, available light shots in the Vatican were shockingly good. Indoors in London (British Museum, British Library, etc.) were everything I could ask for. Walking around Rome in the evening I took twilight shots, again, hand-held, at ISO 1600 and was completely happy with the results. Had a friend we met over there who had a D750. I popped a card into his camera and took 30-40 shots with it. Good stuff too, but not better than I was getting with D800E. I say take the big boy.

Peace,

Todd

I would take the 24-120 for the lighter weight, and I would consider taking he D750 for the same reason. Really can't go wrong with any of these choices.

D750 - good enough, smaller, lighter and most important- need less HD space. I guess you will shoot a lot of photos. But you should know your choice

I have the same bodies and usually opt for the D750 when visiting France. Why? The main reason is weight and size. I favor the D810 but the smaller camera is more convenient in the smaller bag (Think Tank Urban Disguise 30) I have for travel when I want to be more discreet.
I rarely do need the cropping ability of the 36 mp files when traveling so the 24 mp files are perfectly ok.
Make sure you are used to the body different interfaces though. The D750 was new to me last September in Paris and I didn't realized Nikon had reversed the placement of the bracketing and flash exposure compensation on the D750 compared to the D810. I mistakenly turned bracketing when I wanted to adjust flash exposure and though the camera was going down on me with huge sweep of exposure reading between frames.
Aside from this I never regretted leaving the D810 home.
I highly recommend to take a light tripod with you though. Paris is fantastic to photograph at twilight and at night.
The 24-120mm zoom should serve you well and would happily be joined to a fast prime especially for street photography to isolate your main subject(s) from the always present crowd.

I am obviously more familiar with Paris but London is also great. Both offer unique cultural views, so different from the US. Shooting opportunities abound.

I think it's a misconception that the D810 is less forgiving than the D750 or requires a tripod.

Yes, you need more careful shot discipline - probably a tripod - to get absolutely 100% of the potential resolution advantage of the D810. But even if you shoot them exactly the same way you'll still get a lot or most of it.

And to put it bluntly if someone's main criteria for this decision is the 230g difference in weight needs to go the gym. Or, okay, only shoots with little pancake lenses. Because with even a moderately large lens (I might try the 70-200/4 if I was doing a trip like this, for example) the weight difference and size-of-required-bag difference becomes negligible.

For me the relevant factors are whether you're rather have a little more resolution and weather protection / ruggedness or a little higher per-pixel quality and and articulating screen that lets you get shots from wacky angles.

I would also take a nifty 50 1.8 for those very low light.

D750. Lighter. Smaller. Wifi. Low light.

I own both.

I always love hearing how the D810 can't be handheld well. What a bunch of rubbish

I'd go with the D810 because, as you stated, that's your preferred camera. I'd much rather take the option that I'm more comfortable with...

I have both of these bodies as well (we should start a club!). If I could only take one body, and I knew I was going to be doing a lot of shooting indoors with not very good light, I'd probably opt for the d750. It is a fantastic camera and is clearly better in low light than the d810. I think that's the major consideration here, since you won't likely be doing any massive landscapes where the d810 would have a clear edge. These are both great cameras, really you wouldn't go wrong with either one of them. You could probably squeeze both of them in the ud30, that bag can hold an amazing amount of gear for its size.

If your concerned with low light situations ... why bring an f4 lens? And ... how large are you going to be printing? I do have a bias here. I had the d800 and sold it and now have a d750. For travel it would be my choice with a couple of fast primes. problem solved! unless you want to print super big. I often do a multi shot pano with the d750 and get the equivalent of a 200 megapixel camera. In the end, it really wont matter that much. I'd rather have a d810 with a fast prime in bad light than a d750 with a f4 lens.

Bodies aside, I'd look into getting something brighter than f/4 in terms of lenses.

If buying for just gluttony and to know you are buying without being controlled by money the 810 any day of the week.
If cost is a factor then the 750 will do just fine.

The OP has both so it is a "horses for courses" question for this trip - not a purchase decision.
