I was experimenting with lighting setups, and asked my son to pose for a few shots. He was not in the mood, so I worked with what he gave me. I think he is ready for the battle of the bands.

I like the lighting, composition, tone and processing. The T-shirt makes this shot for me; a 3D effect going on. Kudos.

Nice!
So what was the lighting set up for this shot?

- Two strip boxes with grids, one on each side and slightly behind him.
- A beauty dish with grid about two feet above and in front of him.

Thanks!

Randy

pretty simple and effective setup.

just curious as to how much post processing were needed to correct for any unwanted lighting flaws, i.e. shadows, hot spots, etc...

thanks for sharing

Most of the look was achieved with global changes to saturation, contrast, and clarity. I did some spot adjustments to the eyes (as I am sure is evident) and brightened up the sax quite a bit. Here is a before (basically raw out of camera) and after.

randy - based on the before and after image, i believed you are satisfied with the setup. i don't see any lighting anomalies.

the processing well-matched the attitude

Nice work playing with the lighting. The final image isn't really to my taste, but you knew that this wouldn't be everyone's cup-o-tea.

One thing that really bugs me about the image though, the mouth-piece has no reed or ligature (sp?). A sax player really should have known to assemble the sax fully for a shoot. That's almost like a trumpet without a mouth-piece. It simply looks wrong / incomplete.
