> Seems weird to me to create a lens with this awesome FL and design it for DX only.

Maybe because FX would be ridiculously large and heavy?

Anyway, I think you are not understanding what Sigma is doing. They are making it possible for DX owners to more or less duplicate the depth of field (and maybe nearly match the noise level) available with FX. To be honest, FX owners have no reason to complain of a dearth of lens offerings.

Because calling it a 75-150 would be incorrect. It's a 50mm-100mm lens and the distance doesn't change based on the size of the sensor. That's why the field of view is also mentioned with DX lenses....for those that can't figure it out for themselves.

Let's also not forget what they did with the 18-35 F1.8 DX and 24-35 F1.8 FX

A similar situation may arise here.

The weight complaint is also rather silly imo. It's a lot of large glass, it's going to weigh a lot. That's one of the prices you pay.

I'm all for these weird lenses they are putting out. I'll probably never own one of their DX lenses, hell I don't even own an art lens of theirs, but I like what they are doing.

Sigma is on a roll. They are making the lenses that Nikon should have.

Am I missing something? Is the OP upset because Sigma introduced a lens he does not want Seems like a strange reason to be upset. There are lots of lenses I have no need for, but their existance certainly does not bother me (I cant's say the same for people I have no need for)

Guys I'm just confused. It's an amazing FL for portraits, if it was for FF, seems like a slam dunk, albeit the crazy weight.

it's 3.28lb lens for relatively small bodies. Just seems weird.

The best comparison is to the 3.39 lb 70-200 f2.8. Essentially, this lens is the 70-200 for crop cameras. Sure, the focal length is a bit limited, but the much wider aperture allows you to match the light gathering abilities and depth of field attributes that full frame offers. The target market is definitely somewhat limited, but for people who can't justify a D5 and 70-200 but still want more than 6 fps and 70-200 like image quality the 50-100 paired with a D500 will be a great option. I would also expect something similar for full frame in the future, like a 85-120 or 100-135 f2, though of course Sigma might decide that full frame lenses with these specs aren't economical.

The one problem I see with that argument is that Sigma HAD a 50-150 2.8 that they stopped production on. I owned one for my Canon 70D and own on now for my D7200 - the lens is amazingly sharp and by all accounts seems to have been well received.

This 50-100 1.8 is a competely different animal, I love what they are doing even if I never end up with the weird lenses (also I have owned an 18-35 1.8 art in the past too but currently do not - that was a nice lens but too niche for my use)

BTW I would love a similar version for Full Frame!

I know a guy who uses this lens on his D750 (DX mode) to shoot concerts...
the IQ is totally stunning. Sigma's the only one out there making fast AF zooms.
What strikes ME as weird, is this thread...just sayin'

That's a 24-35 f2 Your point, however...is well taken.
For indoor sports, having a 75-150 FOV @ f1.8 is huge. I might
just have to put one thru it's paces on my D500 this rodeo season.

Wonder how fast this one is? Seems like a good range for someone needing similar range on a FX for a DX body.

I was referring to the stop and a third fast (over typical f2.8 zooms)
Having said that, I've been thrilled with the AF speed on my Sigma Global Vision

ok, y'all, sorry I was being so pessimistic when I wrote the thread.

I should have said:

"this lens looks so cool, I just wish it was for FF and a little lighter, thank you Sigma for pushing the envelope".

I'd love to have the 50-100 for my D2Xs, and no, I'm not joking. The old clunker delivers fantastic images at low ISO, and a large aperture zoom would be a perfect match for that. With such a heavy body, the weight of the lens isn't much of an issue.

I've debated getting an 18-35 1.8 art and using it in crop mode on my D750... but then it goes into the question of am I actually gaining something that could be better done with a different set of tools? I know on my Sigma 50-150 2.8 OS I can use it in crop mode and correct most of the vignetting in LR fairly easily but is the gain really there when giving up all the extra megapickles and is the grain really that good to do a crop-zoom post?

I absolutely love what sigma is doing, and plan to own at least two of their art lenses, this one included, in the future.

This may be a bit of a semantic statement, but I just don't see the big draw to fx, and now that sigma is doing what it's doing, I REALLY don't see the draw to fx (for me and what I shoot).

How soon is a refurb d7200 going to be in the 4 to 500 range. Esentially what could happen to those who have contemplated the "upgrade" to fx, is they could stay dx and spend that free, leftover money they saved not buying an fx body on a lens like this. How's that? Almost getting a free piece of prime glass, and what are you sacrificing exactly?

Just how I see it, but I know a lot of people prefer the latitude that an fx sensor gives them. Another to each their own situation.

I'm really looking forward to this lens. It's not cheap and weighs a bit but if it is anything close to my 18-35mm, and these Sigma Global full res samples suggest it is, then my D700 is going to get even less playtime.

Kind of makes me regret not keeping my D7100...

A 35-85mm f/2 (or 1.8) FX please. Don't care if the size is comparable to the 70-200mm f/2.8.

I'm thinking heavily of picking up this lens to compliment the 18-35, which gets used a lot indoors for general photos of my children. When I find myself outdoors with the kids running around, I typically go to my Nikon 85/1.8 but would love to have that range to play with.
