My wife and I built a little log cabin in Alaska last year. This year is the time to do the landscaping. I want to make this the ideal backyards / woods for photographing birds coming into my feeders. Current rough plans are to photograph through an open window but could also use a portable blind to change things up easily. The cabin is surrounded by woods with about 100'x100' clearing with the cabin in it.

I have made the roof overhang a little bigger and wired in 120v plugs near the windows to accommodate studio lights if needed. I also have plans for a small shallow pond for a natural looking bird bath.

What kind of flowers or trees would you recommend for not only attracting birds but also being pleasing to the camera. Any tips for setting up the ideal backyard studio?

I needed to clear some brush and saved an 8' tall poplar sapling.

I "set it up" about eight feet from my window and hung a chain with a seed feeder off the end of my roof eaves.

The birds will stage on the poplar before moving in to feed...

Cheers, Don
