The device is a Melitta coffee filter. Basically it is just a large cone funnel that holds a standard sized cone shaped filter....the same as you would use in a Mr Coffee. The exit hole at the bottom of the funnel is small so the water drains through slowly. Mine also has a tube about 2" long and 1" diameter at the bottom of the funnel. I set it on top of a Stanley thermos and the tube helps hold the funnel upright. I fill the funnel with boiling water a few times until I have a full thermos of coffee.

I have tried a French press but they are messy to clean and the coffee is not filtered so it is undrinkable after a short period of time. The coffee in the thermos is decent even mid day because it is filtered, not overheated and it is protected from the open air. Anyway that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Ben,
I really like photo #3 at the top. You can really see the magic that the Canon 5DS-R does by cancelling out the AA filter in this photo - everything seems a bit sharper.

I have a 5DS-R as well as a converted IR camera w/ the filter removed and the photos have a different look w/o that AA filter.
