Do spots on the mirror show up in photos?
I was cleaning my sensor and noted some red spots of some sort before I locked the mirror up.

No, spots on the mirror will not affect the image. Do not try to clean them as the mirror surface is silvered and can be scratched off. Try blowing it with a blower and if that doesn't work, get it professionally cleaned by Nikon.

Yea, if they won't blow off the mirror, don't touch it yourself.

Or decide in advance to live with any of the consequences (scratches on the mirror) if you do decide to try a dry swab to clean the mirror. The mirror is far more sensitive then the low-pass filter in front of the image sensor, but it is possible t clean it.

If you want to know just how sensitive the mirror surface is, have a look at all those used film cameras on ebay with scratched mirrors
