p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · D500 Compatibility with Sigma 120-300 DG OS?

Guys - I received my D500 last night, and tried to get a couple of shots in prior to dusk - so this comment is based on a very limited data set - and complete lack of knowledge of what the camera is telling me.

I am also aware that Nikon is not especially forgiving on making new cameras compatible with older 3rd party lenses - so, shame on me, buyer beware on that one.

But throughout my 5 minutes of f2.8, long shutter speed shooting I was receiving a blinking "autofocus" text within the viewfinder - shots were hit and miss - just not enough data to determine if this was a
1) operator problem (haven't found the alert notice in the manual yet)
2) setup problem - perhaps I missed a menu item that would "allow" this lens?
3) a true compatibility issue between the 120-300 and the D500?
4) Environmental issue - just not enough light, and the camera was trying to alert me that autofocus would not work under these conditions

When I get home this evening there should be plenty of light to conduct a better/additional test, and I am shooting a BB game tomorrow AM - but until then....have any other early adopters seen/experienced this blinking autofocus issue with this, or any other lens?

I don't blame Nikon for making focusing mechanisms more difficult to reverse engineer. Sigma's lenses are so good and so cheap ... I'm sure Sigma will have to release some firmware updates to ensure compatibility of their lenses with newer focusing systems and cameras. Hope you have the dock!

Keep us updated as I'm curious as well.

Well, I do have the dock (used with my 35) but this is the older 120-300 - so it is not an updatable version......

Thinking I am going to feel foolish when someone notes that blinking autofocus text in a viewfinder is a longstanding Nikon error message - but I've never seen it before, and have shot many, many imagez in borderline light conditions (and honestly, last evening wasn't really borderline - my 70-200 would have had no problem with that light)

We'll see. I'll post updates tonight/tomorrow AM

Very interested in what you discover. I've never seen that message either.

FWIW, my d500 is supposed to get here Monday evening. I have an older 120-300, not an OS version, that I can test, if you'd like. Just let me know and I'll give it a whirl.

If it proves to be a compatibility issue I think Sigma will fix it for you if they can - very possibly at no charge ( though you would have the expense of shipping and insurance to Sigma).

Several years ago I sent a 150-500 in to them to have a circuit board upgrade so it would work with my V1 and FT1.
Unfortunately on receipt of the lens they discovered it was one iteration too old to accept the necessary board. I believe the verge woul have been zero for just a software fix and about $40 for a hardware one.

Good luck

Sigma had to issue firmware updates with the D750 for some older lenses, not sure if that 120-300mm was one. If they will do the same for the D500, it will take some time for that to be an option. I would email and ask them. I sent in one older Sigma lens for firmware update and it was done out of warranty free of charge including shipping. Great service.

If this persists, I suggest you try different focus modes and setups. With my D300s and Sigma 150-600 Sport, it worked great in 51 point 3D color. After loading the latest firmware, I was not tracking action as well and decided to switch to the more popular 21 point and this solved the problem though I switch to 6 point to reduce the amount I needed to steer the focus point. I'm nailing action again.

Ok, so here's the update - it's all good. Shot a BB game yesterday - it was in good lighting, so working in marginal light will remain an open issue for a few hours more - I'm shooting the same team tonight under the lights. FWIW, I loved working with the files - 500 images, I had to adjust exposure 2/3 of a stop on a single image, everything else was light crops and ordinary sharpening. Pushed the DR a bit, and everything came out well. Blacks were rich, no banding -which I wouldn't expect in good light anyway, but the long and short is that I love the camera - and the 120-300 combo is working great.

I discovered something interesting: my D500 will NOT autofocus with my Sigma 120-300/f2.8 Sport with the custom lens settings turned on - I had to turn it off. I forget what exactly I had those set to - but basically I had the AF function speeded up (haven't touched those settings in almost two years, need to connect the USB dock and read what they are).

My 120-300 Sport worked fine on my custom AF settings with the D500 (had one set to speed and the other accuracy). Have you updated to the latest firmware? That might make a difference.
