p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · My First Large Format Print

With nothing better to do on a rainy day, I decided to try out my library's large format printer.

I cleaned up a scan of one of my 4x5 film negatives and brought it down to be printed.

I downsized the scan to 44" x 35" (the scan was 67" wide natively).

I am REALLY impressed with how well the print turned out. This was my first time printing anything this large and I was wondering how good it would look. The detail is amazing!

I've wet printed this image before in my juryrigged darkroom, but only an 8 x 10 image.

The best part about this is the price. My library only charges $5.00 per linear foot for any print. At 44" wide, I can make some LARGE prints now if I want to.

I can see that I'm going to start making use of this printer in the future.

Here is the 44" x 35" print.

And here is the actual image I printed. Shot with my Zone VI 4x5 large format camera on Foma 200 film and developed in HC-110.

Nice. I used to dabble in 4 by 5. Constructed a field camera kit by Bender.

I'm amazed that a library offers such a service. What kind of printer?

It is an Epson SureColor P9000 44" large format photo printer.

Yeah, Loveland Library is really set up well with a lot of things. I also use their Lulzbot Taz 3D printer.

So the scan was at 24,000 dpi or 48,000 dpi? Just working backwards from a printer with an native input resolution of 360 and 720 ppi.

If the scan was scanned at 4000 ppi, which is a pretty common number off a drum scanner, that would translate to 67 inches wide at 298 dpi, or, roughly, 300 dpi, which is what most people would print most prints at given that most don't know what the native printhead res is on their printers. And you'd be really hard pressed to see any real difference between 300 dpi and 360 even though there *might* be a theoretical difference. You'd have to have a neg that was taken on a really sharp film like T-Max100 and shot optimally with a great lens just in order to justify a 4000 ppi scan, which is a healthy 1.8 gigs in 16bit RGB. I'm more surprised that someone at the library actually knew what settings to use just to get a decent print. I'd be really shocked if they knew how to access Advanced Black and White.

Are you telling me the library charged you $15.00 for a 44" X 35" print?

That's below cost.

Which they may not know but perhaps should. I have encountered situations like that before and good service gets shut down as it becomes known and is exploited.

Danger. Large prints are addictive and very expensive. Already you need a bigger desk Soon you'll need more walls.

The print looked a bit too contrasty compared with the other version that you posted. Try creating a screen profile with lower contrast and lower brightness and do your final edits on-screen with that. Then it should print better because you'll know what is about to disappear into the shadows.
