Looking for alternatives for my 100-400 V2 for mounting on a gimbal. I've heard that Kirk makes one. Any alternative options ?

Both copies of my 100-400 II lenses have the Kirk feet. None of the alternatives are as low profile as the Kirk. I also have a RRS foot, but it's taller and worse for the gimbal-type setup I use. RRS and a few others like 4th gen (?) are taller and good for the fat-fingered grabs. Any of the A-S style feet should work, but do check the dimensions for best balance in your particular application.

You can get entire foot replacements from Kirk, RRS, and 4th Generation Design, and maybe others. I haven't bothered to get one because none of them are "low profile". I'm happy to carry the Canon foot + RRS 113 in my bag, for the rare occasions that I'm not shooting it handheld. It's shown in the second photo of my reply in the link below,

I got the RRS foot and I'm going back to the Hejnar plate. I like the idea of taking the Canon foot off when hand shooting. All the replacement feet need a tool for removal which I find a pain.

There are a number of good ones. I've had the RRS foot/plate since I got the lens shortly after it was released, and it is a solid and reliable product.

Plates are really simple, I have a lower cost one bought on Amazon and it lets my lens balance nicely on a gimbal. It does not twist either. I have Kirk and RRS plates as well, the low cost one is just as good IMHO.

If you are looking at a replacement foot, Kirk and RRS seem to be the favorites.

I have two each 100mm and 150 mm Rainbow Imaging plates, the 100mm plate works on my 70-200L nicely for tripod use, I can't recall which I use on the 100-400, I think its the 100mm version but its not here by me right now. I used the 150mm version on my Nikon 200-400 when I had it.

A replacement foot is lower profile and definitely lighter in weight than a plate on the Canon foot. For a while I had one 100-400 II with the Kirk A-S foot and one with the A-S plate on the Canon foot. The Kirk foot has about 5 mm of clearance from the reversed lens hood. I suppose a shorter foot could be used with 1D series bodies, but with a light body the front part is needed for balance.

For handheld use I prefer no foot at all so I understand your compromise. It's too bad none of the 3rd-party feet are removable without tools. Overall I still like the integrated collar for it's rotational smoothness compared to the old 100-400.

I'd like something that wouldn't stick above the finder hump, when the lens is rotated with the foot at the top; otherwise, the bigfoot spends most of its time in the bag.

+1 on both comments, which equals +2.

The bottom of the Kirk foot is well below the viewfinder hump on the 1DX, but about 2mm above the hump on the 5DsR. Does 2mm really make a difference to you?

What's 2mm between friends?

That's a lower profile than I thought. Hmmm, $80 US, that's about $300 CA...

+1 on Kirk foot. It has a smaller profile and feels secure. I agree it would be nice to have an easily removable foot but.......

I looked at the RRS foot and didn't like its high profile, so I went with the Kirk foot and am very pleased with it. Same basic profile as Canon's foot and doesn't interfere with either my BG-E11 or BG-E16 grips on their respective camera. There's also plenty of room for my fingers, and it feels much more solid in my RRS BH-55 than the original Canon foot did.

Maybe someone with a RRS foot can share whether that foot hits the BG-E. I've read that it does interfere with the BG-E16.

My problem with the RRS foot was the extra little dovetail. I found it got in the way of my fingers when using the portrait grip on my 1D bodies. Yes, it can be rotated out of the way, but when I am shooting something landscape and just want to grab a couple quick shots in portrait mode, it is a pain.

The 4th Gen. foot appears not to have the dovetail. I may try it next.

Is the Kirk plate available on amazon? I tried to find it, but it didn't show up.I usually like to just leave the plate on even when I'm shooting without a tripod as well.

Another vote for the RRS plate .... Every time I use the 100-400 2 , I am amazed at how smooth and beautifully machined this plate is ... Worth every candian nickel!

Is the Kirk Foot reversable ? For balancing the lens on a gimbal mount and 1DMKIV ?
