I find the low ISO qualities of the images (1600 to 3200) offer less quality in noise and the color engine than do my old D3S's. I am going to sell my two D5's, and buy a couple more used D3S's for my studio work, as I seldom go over ISO 1600.
I can only say that this is not being my experience at all. The D5 is proving to be the finest camera for all purposes that I have ever had the pleasure of using.
The vital thing with the D5 seems to be to shoot RAW and be very careful that you do not under-expose (because the default settings on all Nikons do tend to under-expose) and then compound the trouble (and add Noise) by trying to open the shadows excessively in Post.
I ETTR (I have my Matrix Meter set to +0.6 EV); use good Camera Profiles and set the Black-point during processing. Neither Noisy shadows nor low DR are proving any problem at all and I am thrilled with the colour-rendering/
I use ACR with my own Custom-built Camera Profiles and have been deliberately seeking-out the widest DR subjects that I can find and the D5 is handling them with aplomb.
My feeling is that the tests, charts and reviews (which have circulated widely on the Internet) on the so-called "Poor DR at low ISO speeds" on the D5 are incorrect and over-stated. And with such superior performance at higher ISO's why confine your shooting to 100 ISO anyway
I have a D3S and am about to list it here because the D5 out-performs the D3S in every way.
Some of my test results are included in this thread:
