Initial, haven't left my balcony, 5 minute impressions are:

It's kinda fat and ugly; A 67 or 77mm filter thread, and thinner profile (there's clearly empty space) would be far better looking. Without hoods, it's a bit shorter than the 16-35, and at similar focal lengths (the zoom extends on the wide end), it's quite a big shorter. The Batis hood sticks out marginally further, though, which makes the size comparison closer-- but it's still shorter. It's surprisingly light.

At f/2.8 it's as good or better in the extreme corners and edges than the 16-35 f/4 at 17mm and f/8 (I thought I was at 18mm, but exif says otherwise)! Granted, my "test" was using AF, tripod mounted, of trees not all that far from (~10m) and perpendicular to my balcony position. There is also a breeze, so this was really unscientific... but I personally trust it.

Very, very minimal distortion. OK, off to go walk around. Yes, it's a NICE lens.

For anyone interested, here are 44 shots from a quick walk around Chicago:

Chicago went from a week of dreary weather to not a cloud in the sky. Unfortunately, I had to be home by 6 PM today b/c my daughter has a concert tonight, so i had harsh afternoon sun. Compositions aren't anything great, but i wanted to get a bunch of straight lines to see how the distortion looked and a lot of detail to check sharpness across the frame. Hopefully you're able to glean something about the performance of the lens from this quick and dirty set.

Eric, thanks for sharing these shots with us. Having lived in the Chicago area for 15 years from the late 70's to early 90's, your photos brought back fond memories. Your Batis 18mm appears sharp, with good color and contrast. I'll get mine today and do some shooting this weekend. Thanks again.

Joe

Me: New wide-angle lens came in the mail today.
Wife: Ok, want me to put it on my camera (A6000) and take it downtown Chicago for a bachelorette party I'm going to Saturday night? I need something wide for group shots at bars.
Me: Uh, um...I don't think it'd fit in your purse, better stick with your 16mm pancake.

Although I guess that would solve the question of "can the new Zeiss Batis survive a night of bar-hopping with 15 drunk women".

I don't blame you! A few of the women going would definitely make the "FE image thread" a popular place for a few days.

Back to the actual lens...yea...it's short and fat, even more than I expected. From a practical standpoint I don't think it'll pack away much different than my old FE 16-35, although it feels much lighter for sure. Hoping to get some shots with it this weekend, we'll see.

Tried a little astro tonight. This is something that I just started this year for the first time though. Unfortunately the plan was kind of a last minute thing with some friends so we did not quite manage to get away far enough from the city. By the time the milky way rose high enough above the horizon to get away from city light, cloud came in Of course it was mostly clear sky earlier in the evening .

Batis 18/[email protected] 2.8, 20s iso 800 A7r ii.

From right upper corner, 100% cropped

I will try to get further away from the city tomorrow night and hopefully the weather will cooperate better!

Thanks! That's encouraging. Looks good. Is 20 seconds a short enough exposure to avoid star trails in your latitude? Looks like some small star movement but very little if any coma.

Cheers! It's pouring down rain here but the minute we get some clear night skies I'll get out and add to the testing.

A shorter exposure would be nice to minimize the star trails and since the ISO was at 800, bumping it up to ISO 1600 would still be fine noise-wise. I see only minor comas at f/2.8 and that in the corner, too. Impressive! Thanks for testing, BTW!

Those stars look great in the corners. 20s at 18mm is going to have some trailing when viewing at 100% and that's mostly what I see there. You can see some slight coma on the two brightest stars but not bad at all. Probably about the same as the Nikon 14-24 which is widely considered one of the best UWA astro lenses.

Thanks, I plan another trip tonight with some friends to a better location but forecast called for partly cloudy so hopefully the cloud will be only in the right part
Will try to reduce shutterspeed tonight and see what happened.
PS I am not sure how much star trail at 100% magnification is considered ideal?
If I use 500/focal lenght rule, 20s should be ok but at 100%,there is definitely some star trail.
I could reduce that by half and go with 10s and increased ISO, I suppose. Ideally, I would try not
to go above iso1600 but will experiment with the parameter a bit more tonight if the weather cooperate.

Well, I'm satisfied...

(These are all stopped down, processed, cropped, etc, and cross-posted to the FE images thread, so won't tell you anything in particular. But I'm happy.)

Do we have any comparisons to the FE 16-35 yet?
