I have my 5DS R set for focus using the * button and the shutter for start AE only. I have Live view mode 1 but have tried mode 2 with the same results.

I want to focus in live view at a specific location in the scene and use other areas for exposure. I don't want the camera to attempt refocus after I have set it.

It seems to have worked this way with my wide lenses, but I was shooting last night at 400mm and noticed the lens refocusing between shots. I normally use the long lens in action mode with ai servo and not in live view so I had never noticed it before.

I did a test with the 24-70 and while I had to reposition it a lot to get refocus, It is indeed doing so. I want to defeat that so that after setting focus, it does not change.

Shooting mode is one shot.

Two obvious work arounds.

1. Focus then turn off AF at the lens. This runs the risk of forgetting its off.

2. Use manual focus. I have never trusted my ability to MF, but the 5DSR screen at 5 x is pretty good. I may try this if I don't find a way to shut off AF after I get focus with a setting change.

I don't quite understand the issue. I can use the * button for focus and then that's it. What is causing it to focus again after you have moved the AF rectangle around? Are you using the cable release?

I don't have the 5DSR, but my 80D has LV servo and it may be disabled by tapping the Quick Screen icon while in LV and selecting an AF mode other than "AF with tracking," e.g., single point. I suspect the 5DSR may have similar options.

Switch from Tracking to Flexizone AF and/or disable Continuous AF.

Where are these settings? I looked all through the AF subject in the manual and all through the camera menu. I do have it set for one shot.

I notice that when I am in live view, it always attempts focus as I move the camera around.

Edit, I found flexizone and it was already set. Still looking for a way to disable continuous tracking

Sorry, Ben - I went out for a bit after I posted that, and didn't see your question.

No problem, I was not looking in the best place, I found it pretty fast. But you put me onto the solution, thanks.
