The 80D may be much improved in shadow pushing from some testing we've seen but at the 5 stop level, it is much cleaner at ISO 3200 than pushing ISO 100....I will do a lot more testing tomorrow sitting around at the eagle nest waiting for eagles to do something. Will try 3 and 4 stop pushes to see how they are....

These are 100% crops with no NR (no chroma, no luminance). Default LR sharpening.

ISO 3200

ISO 100 up 5 stops

ISO 100 out of camera

ISO invariance is pretty tough to demonstrate outside of the studio...those don't look very good.

Yes, I don't shoot in a studio so studio tests mean nothing to me. I shoot outdoors so I tested in real world conditions. All I can conclude is that I'd rather use the native ISO and that it doesn't appear even close to being ISO invariance.

I was waiting for the unpushed ISO 100 crop to load, then realized that it's already loaded. It is that dark on my crappy laptop screen.

The ISO 3200 shot looks better but the pushed ISO 100 shot is not too bad detail wise.... have you applied some chroma NR on the latter?

I agree that shooting at native ISO is better than pushing, but it's nice to know that even extreme pushes don't introduce banding with the new crop sensor. So much so that a modest 1 - 2 stops push for slight exposure errors will still look decent.

Thanks for the test, Geoff!

The color and tone in the 5 stops push still maintained good, the color noise is easy to fix anyway, I will say very good result

No chroma NR on either shot. I dragged the default LR value of 25 down to 0.

I don't intend to do 5 stop underexposed shots. What I will use the most is properly exposing the white heads and being able to lift the shadows a stop or two and get cleaner browns/blacks in the feathers.

I don't see any banding in the shots which is nice, although the 7D2 is also fairly banding free.

Can you walk into a dark cave, put the lens cap on, and shoot at 1/8000th- F/32 and try to open up the shadows?

Thanks for doing this Arbitrage.

On this review they seem to show the 80D has less noise at ISO 6400 than the 7D2. Starts at 8:30 in the video
http://www.provideocoalition.com/canon-eos-80d-glowing-review/

That is different from Photons to Photos has on their comparison charts for noise range above ISO 500
http://www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/RN_ADU.htm

You'll need to select the 80D and 7D2 on each link to show the overlay chart.

Love to see a higher iso comparison from you if you have a chance.

I will try to test the high-ISOs between the 80D and 7D2 tomorrow.

thanks. Great test. I am actually quite happy with those results. yes, the sensor is not ISO agnostic. There is read noise still. However, thats pretty good.

Interesting, thanks. Would you mind to show them with the default chroma NR on in LR? That would make it more easy to spot the difference in luminance noise and detail. If you have time of course.

Thanks for the comparison. These images are in practice more meaningful than the DR charts.

Yes, the 80D is not yet ISO-invariant. Even the best Sony sensors would still require a 0.5-1 stop improvement at ISO 100 to reach that goal. But in this same test the 80D blowns out any previous Canon model, which were about 3 stops under the ISO-invariant paradigm, and now half of that gap has been closed.

Of course, this will not be useful to everybody. People mainly shooting above ISO 800 will find little to nothing improvement with the new tech. But those sticking to ISO 100 will greatly appreciate it.

Here they are with default 25 chroma NR in LR.

I just took your ISO 3200 image though a typical post-processing workflow (although it is just a jpg) and the results after NR and so forth are quite impressive. A tiny bit of work on the highlights and the feather detail looks great, and the small area at lower left that goes all the way to black looks good at very high magnifications.

I did a quick series of shots from 1600 up to 12800 between 7D2 and 80D. Viewing at 2:1 in LR the chroma noise is noticeably worse on the 80D over the 7D2. However, if you use the default LR chroma NR of 25 then the remaining luminance noise is practically equal. I really couldn't tell the difference. This is without downsizing the 80D file, and just viewing both at 2:1 in LR.

I will post some samples later today but probably not till this evening.

Thanks! Hmmm, the ISO 100 +5 EV is not as good as the 3200 for sure.

Ideally yes although there aren't any sensors available today that can achieve it. Some do get close. Here's a comparison of the D7200 to the 80D:

D7200 vs 80D, ISO 100 +5EV vs ISO 3200

And to demonstrate how much progress Canon has made in the 80D, here's a comparison to the 7DM2:

7DM2 vs 80D, ISO 100 +5EV vs ISO 3200

As snapsy wrote, only in the ideal world. For practical use, I would assume that a +4 EV would be comfortable to use. Just a stop too far here.

I did try an ISO 800 underexposed 2 stops compared to ISO 3200. The ISO 3200 looked better.
Next outing I will try an ISO 100 to 800 and see how 3 stops is from base ISO.
