p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Gimbal or video fluid head

Hi I'm in the middle of building a ground pod /skater set up.
Primarily for doing long exposure seascapes.
.but to keep my options open was thinking about using a video fluid head .
How do they compare to say a cheap gimbal....
Will they lock tight enough for long exposure work ..
Will they be free enough to track wildlife...

The fluid head I'm looking at is the benro s6. .
Any thoughts..
Thanks in advance ..

I'd use a decent ball head for the seascapes, and add a Wimberley Sidekick if I wanted to use it with a big lens for tracking wildlife.

You might want to ask in the general gear forum. You will probably get more help there.

Sidekick is 247 GBP at Wex Photographic. That's not cheap, but it's much better solution.

P.S. Steve's right, you should be able to cross-post this thread to the General Gear forum.

I have a ballhead and when I take the 5 seconds to install the Sidekick I then have a gimball head on the same tripod. I get two heads in effect and do not need to have one tripod for the ballhead and a second tripod with a gimbal head mounted. To me this represents a significant cost savings any way you look at it.

The Sidekick costs $250 and a good gimball head from Custom Brackets, RRS, Wimberley, and others is going to cost $600.

For static shots with a big lens a ballhead with a pan base is all that is needed as with the Kirk BH-3 for example. For wildlife the gimball is great for managing a heavy lens and for that the Sidekick is the cheapest way to go.

My ball head is just a bit urgh you know it's all right but the lock knob needs 3/4 turn to go from loose enough to adjust and locked tight hate having to readjust knob.
Have a trigger grip but it tends to pick up vibrations.nearly enough to justify.a beanbag on lens.
So thought a video ball head might be the job...counter balanced and damped sounded
Like a good job. .will post a pic to give you a better idea of what I'm upto.
