p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Is this the best my 1-Ds MkII can focus?

Recently I have been wondering if my 1-Ds MkII is focusing correctly or perhaps I am doing something wrong.

I have attached two images of the same hand-held shot: One cropped and the other not.

Camera settings were:
Mode : Program AE
1/800 @ f10
IOS 100
AF Mode - One Shot
IS - Mode 1

Earlier I tried setting Mode to Av with camera set to f8, but this did not make any difference.

I was expecting this non-moving object to be razor sharp, but I was wrong.

PP was confined to cleaning up most the sensor debris and tweaking the follow:
LR / Presence / Clarity = +39 and Vibrance = +38

All comments and suggestions are most welcome.

Thanks!

I had to reduced the FF image down to the 1.4MB spec which I was not aware of.

Thanks!

I have no idea what your posting is about, or what lens you used, or handheld

When I put on reading glasses my pics always look a lot sharper than I thought they were!

@Imagemaster

Sorry. The lens I used was the EF100-400 F4.5-5.6L IS USM. Shot was taken at 400mm.

What is the issue? The image seems reasonably sharp for the 100-400 @400. I could evaluate the RAW file if posted.

@EB-1

Thanks for your post? When viewing it in LR it looked rather soft to me, but when posted here I will admit that it does look sharper than I had expected.

I would be happy to have you evaluate the RAW file, but the upload limit for an image is 1.4MB. At least that is the message I got when I tried to upload the full-frame JPG from LR.

If you have another method, let me know.

Thanks for your help.

PS. The compressed DNG is 10.4MB. The compressed JPG is 6.6MB.

Look at the sharpness of the pole that the pig is on. It's a sharp photo.

I see no problems either. If you are really concerned, switch to Av and shoot wide open to reduce DoF, keep the lens @400mm, keep ISO below 800 and focus on some test subjects at various distances.

As a side note, my former 1Ds2 had a curious AF inconsistency once that would give noticeable differences in sharpness with static subjects in controlled environments and repeated focus - shoot - focus - shoot - etc tests. So if your nose is on to something that barely shows in your OP, try to repeat the shots and evaluate closely in LR. A 1Ds2 should have extremely good AF.

The focus looks fine.
One thing unrelated, you might want to clean your sensor, do you notice those 'dots' particularly in the full frame ?

Remember that LR does output sharpening, which is an essential part of the RAW workflow.

Thanks for your post. And, 'pig' is right. Sound like you have some experience with the white wings.

These critter's eat everything and leave nothing for the little ones. And to make matters worse, we now have four European Starling that are even worse. The starling are not indigenous to this area, so maybe they'll leave.

Thanks again.

Thanks for your in-depth comments. I will do just as you suggested.

I normally prefer to shoot Av @ f8 thinking I can have my cake and eat it too so long as my shutter speeds remain at 1/500 or greater. I took a very similar shot on Av: 400mm, 1/1600, f8, ISO 200, and the results were identical which prompted me to revert back to Program AE and see if I could do better. Those results lead me to begin this thread.

I will run some tests one some printed material following your suggestions using a tripod and my Canon remote switch to eliminate as many variables as possible. I will report back with my results.

Thanks again for your help.

!

As a matter of fact, I do have to use glasses to use a computer. I will clean the ones I use and have my wife get me some stronger ones for testing purposes. Thanks for your optical analysis.

Guilty as noted. Got it!

Cleaning the sensor debris is 90% of my PP. I tried to clean the sensor recently, but I think it has to be cleaned professionally. I really hate to have to ship it off to be cleaned, but perhaps there is some service nearby (Albuquerque) that can do this and get it back to ASAP.

Thanks for your comments.

Thanks for your comments.

I intentionally did not do any LR sharpening so that I could show the image as it was taken, which I was hoping would show the image as 'soft' as I thought it looked in LR. That said, once the images were posted they looked much sharper than they did in LR. I cannot explain that difference.

Thanks again for your help.

When you render a photo in Lightroom for posting or printing, it normally applies some level of sharpening, so its not surprising that it looks different from the RAW.

It appears to me that the cross pole is very sharp, so the AF might be off slightly.

Did you do a AFMA with the lens? Every camera lens combination is different, use live AF and see if the focus looks better to you. If it does, a slight AFMA adjustment will fix that.
