Not sure of the reason (April Fools maybe) but apparently there was a Sigma sale on Amazon this morning; however, deal is now over. Luck for me, I was able to order the Sigma 105 Macro OS.

Wow, that is half price! Maybe they have a new version in the works?

That's a ridiculous price for a great lens. Wouldn't part with it. I hope somebody grabbed one.

Absolutely a great lens!

I have the Nikon mount version, I use that wide open at events on my D5500 in place of a 24-70 2.8. It is a bargain for the price! It is a little better stopped down, but ISO 3200 or 6400 I can't afford to stop down.

I am/was planning to buy a Canon mount version tomorrow (Sunday, April 3) using my eBay Bucks, when they become available.

Now I am wondering if I should wait for a better sale! The best eBay price now is $284, they were $269 on Friday (for an import version .)

I'll share here if I see any sales. Dang ...

Thanks OP for sharing!

New version could be even better news than this temporary price reduction; Sigma is on a roll lately :-)
But judging from the sales date, maybe some distributor had to meet their quarter sales target ...

Current price in my country is around EUR 340, which is almost half the price they charged in 2011-2013. I looked at this lens years ago and didn't know the price had declined so much. Maybe not quite the optical quality of the Canikon alternatives (Canon 17-55IS is clearly better wide open, but that's about it) but the price difference with those is huge now ...

Looking at lenses for a D500 I'm starting to wonder if this could be an affordable alternative to the new 16-80VR lens (which looks nice, but very expensive) for general 'walk around' photography.

I would primarily buy D500 for wildlife shots (with 4/300PF as primary lens). Don't really need the 50-80mm part of the range, the difference between 16 and 17mm on the wide end is minor and from what I have read the Sigma is excellent from about f/4 but a bit 'soft' wide open. The Sigma is heavier than the Nikon despite smaller range and the Nikon probably wins on AF, but the difference in price is huge ...

Does anyone have experience using the Sigma 17-50 on D500 (AF OK?) or somewhat similar body like D7200 and compared it to the 2.8-4/16-80VR for image quality?

FYI, BuyDig currently has the lens on sale for $299 on their ebay store. They're an authorized Sigma dealer. Here's the link:

You'll only get Sigma's warranty if you buy from an authorized Sigma dealer. The others are grey market.

That's true about the warranty but at that price, who cares? Definitely a great lens!

Thanks for the replies about special offers, but I'm only wondering how the Sigma compares optically to the 16-80VR in the overlapping range, on a recent Nikon body.

I'm in the Netherlands so US pricing is not relevant for me. The Sigma costs around EUR 340,- over here while the Nikon 16-80VR costs a little over EUR 1000,- when purchased with the D500 (or a bit over EUR 1100 when purchased separately).
