p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Devil's Garden

Hi guys,

I thought I would share one image from this past July when I was in GSENM. My wife and I did some camping in Coyote Gulch for a few days and decided to visit some of our favorite places on the way back out. We ended up getting to the parking area here around 1am and just walked around for a bit at night before grabbing a couple hours of sleep. I usually visit this spot at sunset, so getting a chance to view a sunrise here was pretty cool. The sky didn't get too crazy, but we did have some nice and soft pastel colors. I sat here for about 30 minutes as the sun came up and cast some direct light on the formations but I liked the dawn light the best. Hope you guys like it. Thanks

Jordan

It is a very pretty photo with the dark tones below and the nice flow of the framing, foreground rock. Beautiful color to the sky--rich yet subtle. I wish there was some room at the top for the structure to breathe a bit. It would also be nice to see a few more.

Thanks guys As far as more breathing room up top. I was really trying to get that foreground framing to line up a certain way and tilting up or moving back a little wasn't really looking right to me. I'm totally OCD when it comes to checking for enough breathing room for the subject and this one doesn't bother me I think any closer to the edge though and I would have probably trash binned this one.

Hey Jordan,

Very nice shot here, but it doesn't look anything like Death Valley!

Thanks Aaron, I think I missed you by only a couple days a few years back one of the times you were out there.

Much appreciated Jim. I agree, slightly different than Death Valley

Oh yea! This is to my liking. Those stone figurines portrayed by the surroundings which also work as leading lines.

Love the sweet light...but I'm not a fan of the composition. For me what makes this photo is the nice sky and the 3 hoodoos...but the foreground dominates the image leaving the sky and hoodoos as secondary components.

Thanks, they're my favorite grouping in this area.

Thanks for the comment Chez, I can see how it might feel a little dominated by the foreground but I actually have a shot from here that I took last year where I framed it in portrait orientation and made the formations the main subject matter. I figured this time it was worth trying out something else. I am partial to composition below though

I love this composition much better. There is no doubt what the focus of the image is. If you could combine the sweet light of the first image with this composition you'd have a killer image.

Pretty classic compositions these day. Very nice job on them!

I have always loved this place. Even if I don't take a single photo.

I like the compositions on both images you posted and like the additional framing the foreground rocks provide to the formations on the first. Well done on both.
