p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Arnold Arboretum in BW

went out today to my old neighborhood
I shot RAW + jpeg with processing for the jpeg set to BW, red filter. I haven't played with the RAW's at all yet, to see if I can improve upon the original in camera conversions (esp for the highlights, sky). But I did tweak the BW jpegs a tad.
Anyhow, here are a few to get started.

Thx
Scott

Scott,

Not much separation with the first two - the main tree doesn't really stand out from the background much. Have you thought about going heavy-handed with the processing and going for some super isolation?

I like the busy, sweeping feeling of the third. Almost like a current of forest flowing through the the scene like water. Might look for a boost in mid tone contrast and maybe a kiss of USM.

Cheers!

Jeff

a variation, "more aggressive processing" + toning

I like the direction of the last one. Wondering if you can "pull back" a bit on the mid - back trees, so they don't compete as much with the foremost one.

Curious to see raw color (might give diff channels control for crafting mono) too.

by car for work - I lived in Roslindale right off the square for about 10 years and then in JP off Arborway for about 4 before moving.

Jeff, Kent
Thx for your comments
I feel the first two and rework are missing something, often an issue for me in photographing trees
I did want some secondary subjects, "children" of the dominant white barked tree in the background, and less attention, more contrast elsewhere

I'll post a sooc if anyone wants to play
I really like the pegs the camera produces in be with red filter

Took a peak at the channels from the sooc RGB ... I think your last rendering is gonna be a challenge to improve upon much.

At this time of year, my world is full of gray sticks. I went out a few days ago and spent some hours with the camera. When I returned I deleted everything. When you need some special processing to help out....well, that should be all you need to know.

In my photography, I try to look for my friend, Subi. Special, no. Unique, no. Beautiful, no. Interesting, no. I think you just need better subject matter. Of course, I have pretty restrictive interests. Others might have totally different preferences and find some characteristics of Subi.

SUBI ... I find the (I)nteresting part of this image the interplay of contrast / lighting @ tonal value highlighting / range.

I don't entirely disagree Jim. My goal is to see how much I could create a worthwhile image. I do think finding something relatively ordinary and elevating it is a difficult challenge and worthwhile goal.
But, of the images, only the third of the original post is to me a keeper and possibly print-worthy.

I like the first version best. An alternate composition possibility:
