p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Is there a Cfast / CF / SD card reader?

I am looking online for a cardreader that supports both SD/CF and Cfast but i can only find ones without Cfast.

not combined. I prefer to keep readers separate. easier and cheaper to replace

Buy a Lexar Profesional Workflow Hub and the individual readers fit in it.

lexar_professional_workflow_hr1_hub.html

Plus,

lexar_lrwcr1tbna_pro_workflow_cr1_cfast.html

And,
lexar_lrwsr2tbna_professional_workflow_sr2_sd.html

You can also get this with a Thunderbolt interface.

The hub is the same as buying seperate cardreaders. I forgot to add that it's not meant as a static home device, but to take with me on photo trips. But i guess i will be better off just plugging the camera.

You will need one reader for CF/SD and another for CFast I'm afraid.
Maybe there will be better combo readers after CFast cards become popular.
Most likely there will eventually be CFast+SD readers without the CF at all.

I no longer bother with the hub piece. not one of my smarter purchases. the reliability turned out not so great. been working with a quality hub that works just fine.

My CF reader from the Workflow does not work correctly even by itself. That whole system was not ready for prime time.

on my 4 port USB3 hub (not the Lexar) everything works beautifully 3 readers (CFR1, SDR2, Sony XQD I/II readers and a USB3 SSD drive. they actually play nice together.

Cfast has been used solely in camcorders and cine cameras so not a mainstream memory card format. CF is a rightfully dying format so better to concentrate on finding a CFast/SD combo reader.

Do you just have a bad hub, or do you think it is a problematic design?

I suppose we may see CFast and SD it in a USB 3.1 configuration. CFast is the same size as CF so the basic mechanical design would be the same.
Yet where does that leave XQD? Will there also be a combo reader with SD?

I've had 2 and gave up. just using a simple Plugable brand hub setup and it works perfectly. like you said and I agree a problematic design issue in the hub itself my Plugable brand 4 port USB3 hub works just fine. just isn't pretty but it is more universal.

CFast/CFast II is a middle aged SATA interface that was a good idea back in 2008. but it is 2016 and PCIe has greater growth potential. but then what do I know. both CFast and XQD are open standards.

I suppose the question is whether there will be special CFast modes beyond the SATA III. It should be possible with the serial interface and short data path. If not it's a dead end too soon. For now I'm waiting out the future needs. Somehow I suspect there will be yet a different standard from either CFast or XQD less than ten years from now.

Remember PCIe is the current backbone to every laptop and home computer and is proving to be pretty extensible. Oh of course there will be something new in the future. The question is will we care at that point?

I will be 70 in a very short time. I am settled in my gear. Right now my big upgrade is an SSD for my desktop. After that, I am pretty much done with improvements to hardware. They just don't matter that much anymore. I have all the lenses and gear I need, and if something breaks, it breaks.

I replaced my computer monitor only because the cat was chasing a fly and knocked a lamp into the monitor. I didn't even use that as an excuse to up;grade the monitor.

I know, but I don't see any need for upgrades. Everything is quite satisfactory.

the next generation of SATA: SATAe or SATA express in the wild.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SATA_Express

which of course induces the growth of PCIe
