Hey guys,

I was thinking of picking up one of the new Profoto Deep Umbrellas, Small (33") or Medium (41") in silver, for location work. My thinking was - even if it pumps out contrasty light, I can always throw a diffuser on it to soften it. Does anyone have any experience with them? How do they differ from your every day umbrellas? Are they worth it?

Cheers,
Marcus

I have the Deep XL and Deep L both in silver. Beautiful light that is very versatile especially with the diffuser. For outdoor you got it right, get the medium or small.

I have a Large Silver and love it. I use it with an Elinchrom Quadra on a custom grip head I made. The small or medium would be fine if you are only going to shoot head to 3/4 images. Here's a Christmas Card shot with the large.

Gregg - any reason one couldn't use this with a Quadra or Ranger head without any customization (i presume due to the umbrella shaft diameter)?

The reason I made the custom Grip Head was to get my Quadra head as close to the center line as possible. But yes, also due to the 8mm shaft and the weight of the umbrella. Here's a image showing that. Although, now I usually use the head with no reflector on it and it fills the umbrella better. The focusing is great by the way. I also recommend the larger models if you are going to be shooting more than one person.

Will the 8mm shaft of the new deep umbrellas fit the older AcuteB heads? I wasn't sure if the old heads only took 7mm shaft umbrellas. (I don't currently have any umbrellas to prove this theory)

Also - has anyone tried the white deep umbrellas?

Just measure the shaft hole in the head. 8mm equates to 5/16".

The irregular depth of the umbrella is the selling point of the product. Lets just say its a poor man's deep parabolic. You can focus soft or" contrasty" light without losing power. Unlike regular soft/octaboxes you need grids to control your light focus and you lose power too. Are they worth it? I'm sure this product is designed for heavy duty use. Just don't use it when there are strong wind while you are shooting.

How much do you notice in the final shot if your strobe is less centred?

You probably wouldn't notice much with a white Deep umbrella or a standard white or silver but you definitely do with a deep silver. I do however, get much better results with a bare head. Here's another example with it over my left shoulder, no fill. I think it produces just the right amount of contrast.

that makes sense. Using a para usually needs to have a bare head for even distribution and predictable focusing

Very cool - all those explanations make sense. Does anyone have any examples of what the deep white umbrella look like?

If you go to Profoto's website and then click on their blog there are at least three videos showing the use of the Deep umbrellas.

I am planning to get the white one, but here's a couple from my silver one. One light with a speedlight, which is far from ideal with such large umbrella

First I have seen them. They look nice and relatively inexpensive for all the hardware needed, but I'll take a para with 16 sides first.

Hovering around $1K for a modifier, I don't know about "cheap" but definitely a less expensive alternative. Are you picking one up, Phil? I've got it on my wish-list.

Funny, I had been looking at the Ricebowl, and while these are not 16 sided, I really like the concept. Price is actually pretty reasonable. Phil - want me to see if they'll demo it for us? I bet they are somewhere near DTLA.
