p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Using Photoshop on laptop with m3-6Y30 processor

Hi,

I'm thinking of getting a new laptop for travel. I would occasionally fire-up PS CS6 to run some re-sizing actions for on-site slide shows, and maybe do a little PP work on a couple of images, but nothing too demanding.

Specifically, I'm considering the ASUS UX305 laptop with m3-6Y30 processor (1 GHz), 8 GB RAM, and 256GB SSD. I wonder how its performance with CS PS6 would compare to my old laptop with i3 330M processor (2.2 GHz), 4GB RAM, and 320GB HD.

Thanks,
Jim

Can't say specifically for Photoshop but I have heard that this processor compares fairly well with 2GHz i5 chips while offering much lower power consumption and I would expect the extra 8GB of ram would more than offset any advantage (if any) of your older i3 machine

Thanks, David. That sounds promising.

The i3 appears to be a much better chip...

Thanks for the link. I'm confused by the GeekBench 3 scores at the bottom of the article. The m3-6Y30 does significantly better on the first two (multi-core and single core), but is blown away on the AES test. Reading "Interpreting Geekbench 3 Scores" on their blog doesn't help me.

Did you look up the Passmark data?

Good AES performance depends on the AES hardware support. It's not very indicative of PS.

I did now.

The m3-6Y30 scores higher than all of the i3 variants with clock speeds below 3GHz. I'm pretty sure my i3-330M was 2.2 GHz.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Not sure what kind of price you're getting on that m3 laptop Jim..... but right now Newegg has a ASUS F555UA with 2.GHz i7, 8GB ram with 1TB drive for $879 Cdn

Thanks for the info, David. It looks like a powerful computer for a great price. OTOH, I'm looking for a small and light solution. The UX305 I'm considering has a 13.5" screen and weighs 2.6 lbs, while the F555UA has 15.6" and weighs over 5 lbs.

Never easy to find the ideal balance between size, performance and price. Would be much more simple if we could test the devices with the software we plan to use on it ... but that isn't always practical or possible when buying online.

I'm sure the UX will serve you well and I hope you'll give us a report on how it does with Photoshop, its a purchase decision I think many of us will face at some point

Can't you get the UX in a configuration with a better CPU?

What about a surface 4 with i5? Looks like the new version (surface pro 5) may be around the corner.

No. The next CPU up (i5) is in a larger case; 3.2 lbs vs. 2.6 lbs, and a bit thicker, but with same 13.3" screen. It's still smaller than my old i3 (and a bit lighter). If I went with this next-up case, I'd probably go to the i7 version, which is in the same case with the same weight as the i5. OTOH, I'd value the m3's smaller size more highly than the higher processing power, if the processing power in the smaller size is "adequate". Based on what I've seen so far, the m3 is probably better than my old i3 for PS, and that's my baseline for 'adequate'.

P.S. there is an i5 version of the UX305, but it pre-dates Win 10. I don't want to buy a new laptop with a "free upgrade" to Win 10.

P.P.S. I found an online review of a UX305LA with i7 processor, but when it comes to ordering one, it's vapourware.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've looked at it. It's pretty much on par size- and performance-wise with the i5 Zenbook that I described in the previous post to EBH, but it costs about $1000 more than the i5 Zenbook (and $1500 more than the m3 UX305), when configured with the same RAM and SSD. Of course, the higher cost for the Surface is mostly because it has the detachable, touch screen which allows it to operate as either a notebook or a tablet. I don't need the tablet (have iPad).

OK. I'm in.

I just ordered an ASUS Zenbook UX305CA 3m-6Y30, 8 GB, 256 SSD, with IPS 3200 x 1800 multi-touch screen from ...

... guess where.

P.S. It seems to be the only source in North America with the IPS 3200 x 1800 display.

Its quite the price premium for the 3200x1800 display.... I'll be curious to hear what you think of it once you've got this little beaut in your hads

Nope. As far AIK, Newegg has a 1920 x 1080 IPS display, but not the 3200x1800 IPS.

I should change my OP...

Cool.

The one I just nabbed from a different source cost about $998 CA (vs. $1,445 CA at newegg), after conversion from whatever native currency was used for the original transaction.
