p.3 #1 · p.3 #1 · New Irix 11mm f/4 and 15mm f/2.4 lenses

From that interview I had the impression that both lenses will be made available in E mount, but a bit later.

So I'm guessing that they are nonetheless DSLR designs. In which case the 11 will be a lot bigger than the Voigtlander 10, due to both being a stop faster and being heavily retrofocus. So for a lens I might use rarely but be fun to have, I think concern-of the-bag small in really important (for me)

But I am a bit tempted by the 15 despite its size; it'll be a while before there is a Lox 15, and it will cost four or five times this. If this turns out to be as good or better than Samyang with better build and maybe less variance, then it's various cool features (and the build) are tempting as a fast ultra wide for astro.

Can it be really good at this speed, focal length and price? Maybe. If so, the markup some people are making is amazing.

Irix have a Facebook and Flickr page. They've been posting samples (for some time by the look of it) on Flickr that look pretty good to me. No astro shots though.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/irixlens/

Their FB page says they are pushing release back into summer;

http://www.facebook.com/Irixlens/?fref=nf
May 13
"Due to many questions about when the lens will be available, we need to inform you that the previously announced springtime release date can be difficult to meet. We are aiming for the summertime period.
Meanwhile, we want to assure you that we are working hard on introducing the final version of the lens onto the market. At the moment, the pre-production evaluation tests are in their final stages and the results look very promising. As you know, Irix is a completely new project, not related to any of the existing companies. It means that we do not rely on the resources from big companies, nor on their production lines.
We want to deliver the best quality product that will match your expectations and our highest standards. Of course, it is also in our own interest to hand the Irix 15mm out to you as soon as possible. Beginning the sales process means more founds for the development of new Irix products.
Stay tuned to the Irix fan page for new information."

Or maybe we're misunderstanding them?! They're about to releasing a new neutrino camera with neutrino sensor. Combining with this lens, it can catch neutrinos (and photons too) ?!

That release note translates in short:

"Sorry, prototype units had soft corners and 75% of first units were all decentered. Look back in 2017 +- 2 years".

The new Irix lenses were designed for SLR cameras and although they may also support the E-mount, they will most likely be extended to match Sony's flange distance making them even longer and heavier (ala Samyang's "E-mount" lenses)

Yes I fully expect that to be so. And we can only hope if someone at least finds a good sample. I have heard of very few finnish photogs who got a working 14/2.8 samyang adapted to Sony A7x body. Most end up failing to reach infinity or have crappy corners.

They have continued posting images on their FB and Flick pages including some night shots WO or close. The one of the milky way and the house was taken at 2.5 and (to my eye) only has v.slight coma at the top right corner. You can navigate to the full image (taken on 5d3)

I can't find a release date on their FB page. Just "summer" ...

I've ordered an AF Samyang but it will go back if it's no better than my MF version.

Looks like some pretty major vignetting though, which is also not ideal for astro.

Anyone try this lens with an A7II? If I use a Canon AF adaptor, will the electronic contacts work for Exposure comp. and aperture data purposes? I'm interested in buying the Firefly, which looks very affordable and very good, but want to hold off till I know someone has tried it with Sony.

I purchased the Irix 15mm f2.4 Firefly last week and tried it out with my Sony A7rII over the weekend.

You May Delay, But Time Will Not by Pratap J, on Flickr

I use a Fotodiox EF to Sony FE adapter. I am able to change the aperture electronically in-camera. The EXIF displays "15mm F4 G SSM." as the lens data.

Irix now has a LR profile for the 15mm. http://en.irixlens.com/downloads

Distortion looks well controlled. Certainly nothing like the Samyang/Rokinon 14mm f2.8.

Got the 15mm Firefly and used it with a Fotodion adaptor on my A7II. Distortion is pretty well controlled. Flare... can be a problem, depending on composition. Copy seems pretty sharp though I haven't had the time to do a systematic test yet. I love the construction. The plastic is very hard, so it doesn't feel flimsy at all.

The A7II recognizes the focal length of the lens for IBIS, and allows aperture control. All told, I'm a happy customer.

I'm planning to try some astro shots tonight, and I'll post those if it works out.

A review on the Irix 15/2.4: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Irix-15mm-f-2.4-Blackstone-Lens.aspx

Some degradation I the corners, vignetting, COMA but for me, more astro needs to be seen.

So, Bob, the Rokinon 14mm f/2.4 SP is not it for you then?

I have to wonder if he got a well centered lens. He reports varying sharpness in the corners. Would that also affect coma performance?

Joshua, actually, so far I like it a lot. I still need to shoot it more especially under astro conditions but so far, it vignettes much less than the 14/2.8 and appears to be pretty sharp in the corners wide open. One thing for sure is that the Rokinon is definitely a very sharp lens.
