Same. 85mm is a great lens.. but having both, the 58/85 is just too much... Instead, a 58/200 is a better combo

Yes, I forgot to add the 200 to my prime trinity list.

Walk away into the sunset and be happy with your kit. Whatever you do, never borrow a 200 f/2. It will haunt you until you replace that 70-200 with it.

I'm a little late to this thread but ... I do have the 28 and the 35a. I do love both but for different reasons. I love the 35a because I love the iq of the lens I I just love to see the 35a images on my monitor. I would take a lot for me to part with that lens. I really like the way it feels and don't find it too heavy to use most of the day at a wedding. The 28 is a fun focal length. I like that its a bit wider for many shoots but not as distorted for people as a 24. The iq of the 28 to me is not that close to the 35a. Its good but not omg good. When I see the 28g images on the monitor, I'm just glad that I got the image. The look of the lens is pedestrian to me. It sits on the shelf mostly.

still loving the 24G?
do you have the 1.8 or 1.4.

there are some truly excellent comments throughout this thread, thank you all.

I have been all around the block recently
went from 35 Art, to 28G, to 35 1.4G
went back to 28
now I have 20 28 58, and 105 on preorder.

actually I don't have a 28. I returned it today, at the end of a 30 day grace period (open box sale) - it had some extra wear and tear on it. seller took it back.
so I've been looking back at my images in LR, of all these FL. so fun.

I know that the 24 1.8 G ED is a fab lens
20 28 58 105 are a great set of primes.
But as @elijah says, that 20 is only getting used 5% of the time. and I have a 16-35.
So, as I try to curtail my gear a bit... 24G 1.8, 58G, 105E seems like they could get the job done too.
I just know that for people, 28 > 24. 24 can be wonky.

it's wild that the 24 1.8G got 2 ED elements.

"Interestingly, Nikon designed the 24mm f/1.8G to be somewhat similar to its bigger brother optically – both lenses feature a rear focus design comprising of 12 total elements, 2 of which are extra-low dispersion and 2 are aspherical. Both have Nano-coating and Super Integrated Coating technologies applied to lens elements for improving colors and reducing ghosting and flare. Both have the same Silent Wave Motor for fast and quiet autofocus operation. So aside from differences in maximum aperture, number of aperture blades (7 vs 9), differences price, weight and size, the two lenses seem to have a lot in common." - photographylife

I will add that I know the 28G has superior AF, instant lock on my D810.
The AF in the 24 1.8G is not as good.

So, if I decided to sell my 20G. And not get a third 28.
It would be 24/58/105

My d750 is -3 ev, so I could put the 24 1.8G on the d750 and AF would obviously be fine!
Then keep the 58G or 105G on the d810.

Surprised people think the 58-85 gap is too small. I think it's a little too big, and that the more typical 50-85 gap is way too big. Then you've got a tiny gap 85-100. Then another fairly big one 100-135. Then a huge one 135-200. I'd go 58, 75, 95, 120, 150, 200 if I was designing lenses.

It's all a matter of what you already own and what you shoot.

I have a 24-70G, therefore I don't need a 24mm prime or a 35mm prime.
There are many times I would pair a 24-70G + 70-200VRII and many times I'd pair a 28G + 58G.
After fiddling with my setup for years and years It seems like I will settle on two zoom and 3-4 prime kit.
I used to say I'm a prime guy until I got so sick of swapping between lenses during events. I just don't think it's safe to be a "prime guy" anymore.
I am finally fortunate to own a set of zooms and a set of primes so I take advantage of that.

Again, it's all a matter of what you shoot.

Thinking about a switch from 6 lenses to 5.

Current lineup:

Nikkor 16-35 f4 G ED VR
Nikkor 70-200 f4 G ED VR
Nikkor 20 f1.8 G ED
Nikkor 28 f1.8 G
Nikkor 58 f1.4 G
Nikkor 105 f1.4 E

Potential lineup:

Nikkor 16-35 f4 G ED VR
Nikkor 70-200 f4 G ED VR
Nikkor 24 f1.8 G ED
Nikkor 58 f1.4 G
Nikkor 105 f1.4 E

Basically, I am considering selling off my 20 and 28, and replacing them with a 24.
I have the 24 1.8 G ED, right now, on sort of a trial.
So for a week or so, I have the 20, 24, and 28 1.8 Trio in my possession!
GREEDY I KNOW!

oops I also have a tokina 100mm macro 2.8, it's pretty cool.

The potential lineup seems ideal (current ain't bad). You have the wide end and long end covered with zooms and can easily crop from 24 to 28/35 etc to fill out the prime category. The 24 f1.8 may be the sharpest in the stable and the light variety can always be on hand. I struggle with the perspective distortion for enviro portraits on the shorter end, but otherwise enjoy the FL. I guess no one looks Great at 28, especially if we are heavy or have strong features.

I have the poor mans version with the 24 f/2.8 / 58 f/1.4 / 80-200 f/2.8

The 58 f/1.4 is an almost permanent fixture.

The long end is to cumbersome for my lifestyle and trying to move it for a 20/28 or 85 (again). I can only dream of the 105 f/1.4

I am a hobbyist and will never get paid for an image so I can keep things more simple. I could honestly be fine with the 58 f/1.4 only and pay off my debts and travel with the rest. You certainly have more ground to cover with paid work.

Best of luck.

If you need to move the 20/28 and are willing to finance, let me know! I'm good for it. :-)

I sold my 28mm because the focus and focus shift were horrible for me. The 24mm 1.8 has been excellent for me.

I tried this, but this didn't work for me. At 24mm, shooting people was way too tricky for me due to perspective distortion. That's why I went for 28mm instead as my widest angle for people.

I'm actually quoting myself from what I have said half a year ago; I sold both, the 20mm and 35mm and bought a 28mm f/1.8G again instead.
It's my favorite wide prime ever. As michi said, the 28G is probably the widest I'll use for people (huge group shots, etc.
24mm is just too wide for that stuff.

I'm leaning towards keeping the 20/28.

I also have a d7200.
D810 58g
D750 105e
D7200 20g = 30mm FL
Or put the 58 on the crop for a 105 and I don't need the 105e!

I guess it makes sense to keep the 20/28 with three bodies laying around. I can keep three setups in a f2 ready to rock.

Interesting thread! I have more or less the same kind of questions. I went from Zeiss primes to the 2.8 zooms and then back to primes. Here is my current set:
- 35/85 1.4G
- 58/1.4 for a one lens only solution
- 20/1.8G when wide is needed

I find 20mm so wide, it's not getting used that much. So I was thinking selling it for a 24/1.4 but I'm afraid it could be too close to the 35 as a normal-wide lens. Then I would have two duos: 35/85 and 24/58. Another option would be to sell 20, 35 and 85 and buy a 105 to get a 24/58/105 set...

So far I'm pretty happy. With the D810 there's enough room to crop a little.
I'm now waiting for a super wide T/S (the rumored 19/4.0 T/S).
