I recently purchased a Sigma 150-600 Contemporary lens to use on my D3S.
The owners manual that came with it is not exactly the best written one.
There is a focus switch on it that has three settings. AF / MO / MF
The manual focus works fine disabling the autofocus.
I do not see any difference though between AF and MO (Manual Override)
I presumed that the manual focus ring on the lens would be disabled when this switch was on.
I tried disabling the manual focus using the USB dock but still no difference.
I'm baffled as to what the function of the manual override is.

Manual override allows you to focus manually simply by turning the focus ring. this can be helpful when you subject is in a location where you can't keep a focus point on it.

When I am in AF mode the focus ring works.
When I am in MO mode the focus ring works.
I do not see any difference in the function of the focus ring between the 2 settings.
Please let me know if yours behaves differently as I have not had it 30 days yet and can return it if it is defective.

If your lens is focusing while in AF and your turn the focus ring you will have a fight with the AF motor. Could be bad for you or the lens.

On your lens, when you are in AF mode is your manual focus ring disabled?
That's what I was expecting but on mine it is not disabled.

Thanks Will.
I was beginning to think there was something wrong with my copy.

My understanding of the situation "Manual Override" manually change focus to MF eliminates the AF activity and not merely allows correction of focus in the AF mode eliminates the need to change to manual focus mode while shooting

The idea is that if AF isn't grabbing your subject then without MO you would have to switch to Manual before you could properly achieve focus on your own, particularly if you're not using back button focus since the shutter button would once again try and acquire focus for you. With MO a turn of the focus ring will disengage the AF function temporarily allowing you to focus manually without changing the switch on the lens. I don't use it, but I can see its usefulness.

How much of a turn is necessary to override it is a setable parameter if you have the USB dock. I suspect those who use it a lot would want it set for less of a turn where those who do not would want the turn to be larger to prevent accidental invocation.
