I think I might be the last person on Earth to get a smartphone, now I'd like to know what apps you recommend for photography. I chose the Samsung S7 for its camera, display and memory expansion options, so besides The Photographer's Ephemeris what other apps are you using?

I really like PlanIt Pro for my Milky Way shots and general scouting.

I have several Androids phones, but do not use any photo apps so you are ahead of me.
Usually there is limited or no service where I travel.

I figure if I have to carry a brick around in my pocket I might as well make it useful for something. Evangelist Makris thanks for the PlanIt Pro suggestion, that looks like what I have in mind and it's highly rated too. EB-1, I envy your excursions into the wild. sjms, that's true, but only people older than myself seem to not have them.

I use DSLR Controller to make my Galaxy Note 3 into a remote viewing screen and camera controller for my Canon DSLR.

With what cameras? I thought only the cheaper ones have the WiFi.

I use the camera's A/V Out /Digital (mini-USB) connection with an OTG cable to the phone micro-USB 3 micro connector. It provides much higher resolution that the HDMI WiFi output and it doesn't suck back the battery.

Clear sky Droid, the android app for clear sky chart on the Web, does a pretty good job of predicting clear skies. Its free. Helps me plan milky way photography.

Also see-
The photographer ephemeris.
A tide charts app of some kind.
Lunasolcal mobile is quick and easy for rise and set times. Has a nice widget.

Wow Jim, that's pregnant.
I could have used this cable with the Perseid meteor shower. It is very difficult to aim my camera when it's upside down and abutting my astrotrac. Southerly milky way is easy, but north is like playing twister.
Camranger is nice but more gear to tote around.
I imagine it's note hard to Google and find the proper cables.

Hi David,

I use a couple of generic OTG cables that I bought in 2014 from eBay member johnz012. He doesn't appear to have any similar listings at the moment. There is a micro-USB to USB adapter which might work fine. There's tons of them on eBay and Amazon.

Next time I need some, I'll probably go to Tigerdirect.ca, which is a reliable Canadian electronics online vendor. They probably didn't have any in 2014, as that's the first place that I usually check. Second place is The Source (was Radio Shack). You probably have an equivalent favourite in the States. OTOH, I'd probably go with the one linked at the DSLRController site, unless it seems too expensive.
