With a $4,000 - $5,000 budget for body & lenses ... how would you start your initial lineup of glass for a K-1?
Looking for a blend of current & legacy / alts.

Interested to see how this pans out. I know pentax has some great lenses, but other than that I know very little about them.

Here are a few -

*Pentax 31 Ltd: $800 (this is my most used landscape lens on the A7r).

CV SLII 40/2 Ultron (love the focal length vs a 50 and, since my CV 40/1.4 Nokton is a no go on the K1, may try this at some point.) $449 new currently (though it's discontinued). There is also an older, M42 version which will work with the K1 (using the m42 to Pentax K adapter).

*C/Y MM 85/2.8 Sonnar Leitaxed for Pentax: $284 lens, $80-90 shipped Leitax adapter. Also a lens I currently use on my A7r in adapted Pentax Leitax form.

Well for me as my first lenses I'd look into would be (I base this solely on things that I've seen and I haven't done a ton of research into these)

Tamron 15-30mm f2.8
Tamron 17mm f3.5 or Tokina 17mm f3.5
Pentax 24-35mm
Pentax 28mm f3.5 K (not M version)
Pentax 31mm LTD
Sigma 35mm f1.4
Pentax 43mm LTD
Pentax 55mm f1.4 DA*
Pentax 77mm LTD
Pentax 80-320mm

The following should give the best possible IQ for now.

New :
DFA 15-30/2.8
DFA 24-70/2.8
DFA 70-200/2.8

Mixed :
Samyang 14/2.8
Pentax K28/3.5
FA35/2
FA31/1.8ltd
FA43/1.9ltd
FA50/1.4
FA77/1.8ltd
DFA100/2.8 macro

Others I like/love, but not necessarily for pure MTF numbers. (small portable, nice rendering, works 'well enough'), or are in this below list because they are not available 'new'
M20/4
M85/2 (in fact most of their 85mm)
K135/2.5 (in fact most of their 135mm)
FA*85/1.4
FA*80-200/2.8
F*300/4.5 (an very fine and small 300mm with AF)

There are probably others, but these are off the top of my head for now.

I have used all the listed on FF (A7+kolari mod), except the new DFA zooms.

If (or when) I get one to backup my Pentax 645z I'll be getting the 15-30 lens and that's it. Future lens investments would likely be the other two members of the f2.8 trinity.

Kent,

Here would be my list:

Camera: $1,800 at that price and with the budget I would get just one.

Personally I would go all primes and I could stay just under the budget with:

FA 20mm f/2.8 - about $500
FA Limited 31mm f/1.8 - about $900
FA 50mm f/1.7 about $175
FA Limited 77mm f/1.8 - about $700
Zeiss 100mm f/2 Macro - about $1000 (Maybe you could find one in Pentax mount - did they make them? If not a Nikon mount one could definitely be adapted and would be worth in IMO),

That is $75 over budget, but close enough I would hope and would make an excellent set of lenses.

Pentax(tamron) 15-30 USD1500
Pentax 31 limited (or sigma 35 art) USD750
Pentax 77 limited USD750

Perhaps the Samyang 24 TS (800) or the 135 f2 (600) if I have some money remaining.

I am not a long lens shooter.

I'd go with a ZK 25/2.8 (or adapted ZS, whichever I could find cheaper), the 43 Limited, and a frankenlensed Rodenstock APO-Rodagon-N 75/4 to start.

I once owned the Z* 25/2.8 and it was a great lens on the A900. I don't how it is on 36MP's. I currently own the Sigma Art 24/1.4 and I hope they offer it in Pentax K mount at some point (as I could get a mount change from Sigma). That lens is remarkably sharp corner to corner on the A7r.

One lens that is not quite up to 36MP's corner to corner is the OM 24/2.8. I own it and it's nice - exceptional even on APS (or on a lower MP FF) - but it does not take full advantage of a 36MP FF sensor with regard to resolution.

The three Pentax limited lenses are great, but none of us have experience with how they perform on a 36 MP FF sensor.

I have a lot of experience with the 31Ltd on the 36MP Sony A7r. I have also tested the 77Ltd on that camera (and the 43Ltd). A good sample (and there are poor samples out there unfortunately) of the 31Ltd is close to unmatched for stopped down landscape use on FF 36MP's. The best copies seem to be the earlier Made in Japan samples, not the current Assembled in Vietnam samples (which is what Lloyd tested). I base that on what a known good sample can do versus the numerous tests (many if not all of which are using later AIV copies) that show so so performance. It's worth seeking out a good copy if you like this focal length imo.

This test (on the A7r) jives with my findings on the A7r:

...and here are some of my tests with the 31Ltd on the A7r.

Did he test these on the K1 or the APS, 24MP K3? Surprised he would have got a K1 already.

You're right - I skimmed too fast. He was looking at downloaded K-1 samples and his tests of the other Pentax lenses are on APS-C bodies. I'm deleting my post above.

Ha Ha.

As a side note, I'm not sure how the 31 would do on the APS 24MP K3 with regard to absolute resolving ability. The equivalent pixel density of a FF 36MP sensor is around that of a 16MP APS sensor. I have used lenses which were fine on APS 16MP's but clearly showed a resolution hit at APS 24MP's Thus, the 31 might be at it's limit (as far as taking full advantage) so to speak at FF 36MP's.

The 25 does well on the a7rII, so it should be good on the K-1. Nice and sharp wide open across 90% of the frame, with the edges and corners sharpening up acceptably at 4, great at 5.6. FC when close focused and vignetting are it's biggest problems. I think it would pair up well in high-res mode for some landscapes. I honestly didn't think I was going to be all that impressed with the lens when I picked it up since it doesn't receive the love the Distagon 21 does, but I was pleasantly surprised. I've since upgraded to the ZF.2 25/2, and I've convinced myself that the extra stop and marginally better edge performance at wider apertures were worth the increased size, but every time I stop it down to 4, there's a voice in my head that tells me I could be carrying around a much smaller lens with visibly indistinguishable performance.

I agree with you on the OM 24. I think a lot of lenses we were happy shooting on smaller and/or lower res sensors are getting re-evaluated now. It's tough to see all the deficiencies in our treasured lenses go from hardly noticeable to glaringly obvious.

Good insight ... reminded me of a couple I forgot about @ 40CV & 25/2.8 ... not much experience here for me with pk glass, so I'm gonna have to follow some leads in that matter.

I liked what the k3 ii has going for it ... but not interested in crop so the k1 could finally be the replacement to the SLR/C. Years of waiting for others to come around to what I like has been so long that Pentax might be the one to deliver for me.

I hope so ... would sure be a quantum leap above my one trick pony that is due for the pasture. Just need a game plan on glass to get started before I start to transition .
