Went out with a specific subject in mind today and my scouting paid off. I had seen my target subject yesterday but it was near sundown and I had no chance to capture an image so I thought I'd go make a concerted effort to see one. Sat in one spot for four hours in hopes that the subject I wanted to capture would make an appearance.
About two hours into the marathon I spotted the first of two pileated woodpeckers make a flyby of my location so at least I knew that my efforts had a chance to pay off. I waited a few minutes more and one came in for a landing and I fired off the first shots of a bird I've never photographed in the wild. It was pretty exciting to see one close enough to make an image but they are some challenging critters to capture.
Like most woodpeckers they are not in a single spot for too long before they fly off, loudly announcing their departure. Waited and watched for quite a long while and though I could hear them, neither was close enough to make an image. Finally one came back around and I made a few more images. While I don't particularly like the utility pole, it is where this one is making its home so I'll take what it gives me. I did manage to observe one working on a tree while I was waiting and I may be able to get a better image from that vantage point. Patience and perseverance will hopefully pay off!
