Never seen a duck like this before. Any help in telling what kind it is. Photo was taking on the Mississippi River in Minnesota.

My Sibley guide has a drawing of an American Black Duck X Mallard hybrid adult breeding that looks pretty much like this. For sure it is some sort of cross/hybrid.

EDIT: See my later post below...this is not an ABDxM hybrid. I would guess Intersex Female Mallard....

Way too complicated a solution Geoff. This is a Male Mallard in eclipse plumage. This phase happens every year outside of the breeding season.

Sounds good to me, never seen one in that plumage...will research!!

I did some reading....always interesting. I don't think Mallards should be in eclipse plumage in February and that is not a male mallard bill.

One website has a similar looking duck and the thoughts were that it is actually an old female with not enough estrogen and therefore starts to gain male characteristics in the plumage. This is termed an Intersex female.
