p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Yosemite’s Horsetail Falls is Flowing

I know it’s a couple weeks early, but I drove to Yosemite yesterday afternoon ostensibly just to see if Horsetail was flowing—it was. As the sky was relatively clear, I decided to stick it out until sunset to see if it would light-up. It looked promising about an hour prior; but just as the sun set, some high, thin clouds appeared and muted the scene. Besides the sun’s not yet far enough west to really light it up. The good news is there’s water this year.

Thanks for the info. That is good news. I expect very good flow considering all the snow the park got.

Y'all keep in mind the flow of Horsetail Fall changes daily. The flow is dictated by the snowpack, and whether that snowpack is receiving direct sunlight and for how long. No flow in the morning can be a torrent by 3pm, and vice-versa. So, between 5:22pm and 5:30pm, during the last 10 days of February, there must be:

1) A large enough snowpack to generate snowmelt
2) Enough sunlight during the day to melt snow for the runoff
3) A clear sky directly to the west

Any deviation for any of these parameters will detract from the display. This is why it is so much of a challenge to capture. What it is doing today is a good barometer of what we might expect later in the month. But it's predicted to be clear the next ten days which will certainly reduce the snowpack. Try to capture it early, say from the 10th or 12th of Feb. You might get lucky.

Beautiful capture, love the pastel colors.

Yosemite is a place I would love to visit this year.
