This is the first version of the AFS 300/2.8. It is sharp, fast, and has no performance issues. I have used all of the modern 300/2.8 Nikons and they all focus as quickly and are all as sharp, this lens keeps up with all of them.
The reason it is priced low is because the previous owner dinged it in such a way as to actually puncture the metal housing. This sounds worse than it is and if I did not mention it you might not notice until you pulled the tape seal off. There are absolutely no performance problem or dust or any other issue because of it, so there is no point in repairing it for mega-bucks. Just use the lens like any other professional. It's a user. Remember that VR does nothing for action sports photography and being such a large lens, it will get cosmetic scuffs more than a smaller lens, so why pay $5400 for the newest lens that offers little practical advantage?
Comes with proper lenshade, rear cap, after market neoprene front cap. The front element is protected by replaceable clear glass, which is clean. Aperture blades are clean and mesh well. Manual focus is smooth, all buttons work, aperture detents are crisp (it is a D lens with an aperture ring) and there are some exterior signs of cosmetic wear. Tripod mount ring locks good, filter mount is secure with appropriate filter.
