Thank you very much.
At first I wasn't impressed with the GX8 and this lens, then I discovered
e-shutter and that made a big difference.

I agree with Rasmus - it's a nice shot. But why would the e-shutter make a big difference, Robert? Because it removes any shutter shock? Is it that big of a deal? Would you therefore advise that I use the e-shutter on my E-M1 with the 300/4 lens? I have not tried the e-shutter since I upgraded to version 4.0 firmware.

Bobby,
I am using the e-shutter almost all the time now especially when using longer focal lengths. I compared some images from E-M1 using my 75-300mm lens at 300mm with the regular and the e-shutter. The difference in sharpness was so evident when I looked at the images at 100% that I almost fell off my chair. The e-shutter made this lens at 300mm look like I have never seen before.
You may not find this difference so obvious like I did but I think it is worth to try it anyway.

Thanks Julius. I will have to research this a bit more because of these 2 threads. Apparently with an Olympus camera you will get about 1 stop more noise when you use the e-shutter. So there are pros and cons.

I remember using a Nikon D800 with a Nikon 300/4 AF-S in the shutter speed interval from 1/2 sec - 1/60 sec. This was an excersice in frustration, since you would inevitably get 1-2 pixels of movement unsharpness, even with the mirror up.

Later I got a Sony Nex-7, which had a new (to me) function. - electronic first curtain (EFCS), which means that only the second closing curtain is mechanical. Then I tried the Nikon 400/5.6 Ai-S and the AF-S 300/4. There was no more unsharpness ftom 1/2 - 1/60 sec. There was no blurring of the pixels. Add to this that the 24mp APS-C sensor of the Nex-7 has a higher pixel density than a 36mp full frame sensor.

I've never used a Nikon DSLR for tripod mounted tele photography after that. Now I don't even own a DSLR.

Use the e-shutter on Olympus.

I've started to use e-shutter since firmware release 4.0 on the E-M1 and I do see far fewer slightly blurry shots. That's been my biggest problem with my E-M5 and E-M1 since I moved to m43, shutter shock. The biggest problem is that you never know when it will happen. I've had it happen on the E-M5 all the way up to 1/250th of a second but it's rare.

Great knowing that you found a way to make both the camera and lens shine Medecineman as the lens is truly outstanding! What bothers me a little bit though is that we shouldn't have to use e-shutter all the time.

Bobby, the noise might be higher (I haven't seen it but then again I've never thought about it and I haven't shot enough with just e-shutter) but you can use longer shutter times with less chance of blur.

Actually, Olympus have kind of decided that e-shutter will give you a latitude of two stops. You can check it, set the camera to auto iso and find a setting that gives you 400 or 800 with the e-shutter activated. Keep pointing the camera at the same point and change to anti shock mode instead. The auto iso will go up by two stop. From 800 too 3200 for example. So in reality you might actually be able to get a stop better performance

Of course, e-shutter has got other problem with moving subject or different types of light. Set it to e-shutter and shoot a new LED lamp connected to the wall for example, you get a lot of flickering (same from a TV).

Thanks for the info Bobby, interesting subject I have to keep an eye on it myself to gather some more experience.

Is it possible that I have never had an issue with shutter shock?

Well Thomas, if you have never seen it (even if it has happened to you) then yes, of course you've never had an issue with it

Unfortunately I have and that was before I knew what it was.

I first noticed it on a portrait shoot with shutter speed around 1/100 - 1/160 with the E-M5 and Oly 45mm F1.8.
I was shooting hand held mostly wide open which is no problem for that lens. When I got home and checked it on my computer I noticed many shots were slightly blurry in a way I hadn't see before. It wasn't missed focus but neither was it motion blur from unsteady hands.
I noticed it several times after that as well and started searching for it and found out about shutter shock.
It happens on my E-M1 as well but for some reason it seems to happen more often with the smaller lighter lenses such as the 45mm F1.8.

My biggest concern with it, is like I said before, I never know when it will happen. If I had known that it happens between 1/60th and 1/100th of a second, (or any other shutter speed interval) I would simply avoid those speed by changing ISO but I can't because it has happened at speeds faster then that as well.

So, if you haven't experienced it, don't think about it, don't look for it, just rejoice and be happy about it and know that I am very jealous of you!

Sorry I'm late in reply. I have to work this week
For a long time I thought that my Lumix 100-300 was sharper than the Oly 40-150/2.8.
the e-shutter for me and my shooting style is eye opening experience.
So far (with the Lumix) the only problem is when I forget and then wonder why my flash won't
work or other features won't work....then I remember I've set it to e-shutter....so...I programmed
a button that quickly accesses it.

Like Julius I almost always in e-shutter mode now.

A bit more noise and less DR.
sorry I don't know anything about the EM-1, except I'm curious as to when the EM-1 mk ii will get here !
Poof (the Mrs.) has the OMD-m5 mk ii and just as often as me is using e-shutter.
Truthfully when I think about it I will mostly likely add GH5 verusus EM-1ii. I'm just used to the menus and that old dog and tricks thing.

I am still experimenting with the e-shutter compared to normal 0-delay anti shock in the E-M1. The e-shutter option was added with Firmware 4 in December 2015 so I haven't used it very much yet.

When sitting at home just experimenting between the two I get pretty similar results as far as sharpness goes but I think it would be different in a real scenario with less control (even a portrait shoot). I haven't noticed any changes in dynamic range or noise so far but I haven't looked for it either, maybe it's there, maybe it's not.

It's a very nice thing to have though as I have experienced quite a bit of shutter lag in the past as I said.

First mirror slap now shutter shock---always something
I have to stand corrected. I asked Poof the Mrs. yesterday on our photo walk (an almost daily event) if she was in e-shutter most of the time.....methinking yes. She said no, maybe 50% of the time. So now I stand self-corrected.

OK e-shutter is a bit off the dynamic range and a touch more noise ----same thing happens with my A7Rii---- BUT don't we increase the life span of the camera via e-shutter? Not that most of us keep a camera body long enough for that to happen, so I guess I'm asking a theory question.

One of the funnest things I can do is put my little GM-5 on the shoulder strap of my backpack, go into silent mode, remote it to my phone, and do street photography and act as if I'm texting someone when I'm really focusing on a person from 4 feet looking straight at their face

Can't afford to have any more noise or lose DR - so I would rather shoot in "anti-shock 0-sec" mode I think, with my E-M1, rather than the silent mode - as I am not sure if I have had shutter shock problems before. Having said that, I will have to experiment with both modes when I get my 300/4.

Bobby, Poof told me one was better than the other from her research into it....I'll have to ask her which she said. It should apply to me as well with the OMD m10ii but I only use it for Live Composite.....
