I like the simple stark, elegance of the photograph. The non-rule-of-thirds composition contributes well to the hard simplicity of the scene which speaks to the hardness of winter.
The one zone down of the sky area and its domination of the composition contrasts well the warmth of horses' tones. Going to too high a value for the sky would have been less effective.
One aspect which may work against you in comments is the domestic horses on a wildlife forum. That said, as someone from winter country, I like this photograph a lot, even as a wildlife photographer.
