p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · What camera/lens is this man using?

I was going though and PP'ing some older (2011/2010) photos I took with the Zeiss Distagon 2/35 ZE to post on the ZE/ZF/ZM thread when I came across a photo with an older man in the background wearing a camera with a behemoth of a lens. It's the only photo I have with him in it. Unfortunately, he isn't in focus as the main subject was fully cropped out.

Would anyone possibly know what lens (or camera) this man was using?

My observations:

- The camera has a protruding attachment on the hot shoe. Possibly a film camera...
- The lens hood(?) looks very large. The lens reminds me of a fisheye for some reason...
- The lens hood has some sort of stickers on it, likely put there by the old man.
- The yellow camera strap is not very wide. The color reminds me of something Nikon would use.

I figured I would ask here in the Alt Forum because the gear in the photo might be alt.

It might be a Nikkor 8mm f/2.8 Fisheye with a non-standard front cover. It would have about the same front diameter as my Canon 300/2.8L IS (i.e. it's big).

It's a pipsqueek compared to the Nikkor 6mm f/2.8 Fisheye (236 mm diameter, 5.2 kg)

Probably not a lens hood since it's gotta be a (very) wide lens which would have a very short hood. Maybe an Arsat 30mm on a 35mm film camera? (I am not sure why you'd adapt a 30mm ultrawide medium format lens to a 35mm where it's barely wide, but seen it done a few times...)

I wonder if the attachment on the hot show is to aid focus/framing of the lens. That must be one serious wide angle lens.

Lens size and color makes me think Cooke cine. Camera shape makes me think Canon. That's the right time frame for the 5D II and cinematographers were excited about that sort of combination. Which would make the hump on top a microphone or mic dongle. Perhaps?

Cheers,
Jon

Judging by the size, it's probably a new Sony mirrorless lens,,,

That's crazy looking,
The image looks like its in japan.
Is there anything else in the rest of the image that might give us a hint?
Location, particular event?

It is in Japan. I will upload the whole photo tonight when I have some time. I took the photo during a parade/street festival in Hino, Tokyo, Japan. The lens could be a fisheye, but I don't particularly see how a fisheye would be a lens to use in that situation. Especially where the onlookers were standing. Who knows?

Here's the original photo. It's obviously not a "keeper", but it might help put some context into the photo and provide any clues/hints.

The old man and the camera would have made an incredibly interesting street subject - very enigmatic seeing someone so old, with a huge, complex camera and lens.

Pity you were focused on the parade.

This man is a poster "boy" for needing a mirrorless m43 system.

sigh where is that "zoom and enhance" guy from the CIA when you need him?

the old man looks practically like a comic book figure, with that big camera, thin strap, and tight ankle pants

UWA lens with custom made filter holder would be my bet.

Either that or it is not a camera and a lens what we are looking at.
