It has been a long time since I tried to take pictures of birds. This one scared the 3 yr old granddaughter. It seems some birds can get a bit aggressive when trying to get fed.

Nice job, good pose, exposure and seems well focused. These seagulls become very acclimated to people because they get fed.

Little to add beyond Ben's comments.
Very nicely done and I suspect BW works better than color, especially with little in the sky.

Gulls are rats with wings, and that comes from a parrot owner!

Perhaps a little more space to "swoop" into, some shadow recovery on the legs/feet and some sharpening?

Cheers,

Jeff

I tried a second time to process from the raw. Maybe this version will be a bit better.

Unfortunately, I am dealing with the curse of the Canon camera sensors. This was shot at ISO800. The results don't look too bad except that I needed to pull some details from the shadows and that is were the Canon sensor results look bad with lots of noise.

Heya Jim,

I think you're missing out on a lot of contrast and tonality here.

I boosted contrast significantly, set black and white points and did some NR. You will lose a bit of detail, but I think the extra tonality gives you a deeper and richer seagull experience.

Thoughts?

Jeff

Jeff, looks good.

I guess I lose patience trying to optimize an image for the web. However, I did tinker in Photoshop with with my second version for printing:
More white around the eye
Dodge the lines on the feet
Outlined the beak with dark and lightened the interior of the beak
A little dodge and burn on the feathers to increase definition

With Qimage, for the final print, I added a bit of contrast and slightly darkened
Added lots of DFS sharpening
Selected medium for noise reduction

I now have a 12x18 rat print ready for the wall. I will probably put it on the wall for a couple of weeks until it gets replaced with something new.

Thank for helping me to work on this.

OK; admit maybe too much, but used Freaky Details and contrast mask techniques for this result.

Quite nice capture. I understand about the dynamic range issue. I could accept the same resolution in my next camera so long as there is a significantly improved dynamic range. More pixels are nice, but dynamic range and low noise are far more important to me.

Lyle, you belong in one of the classes I attend: creative photography. Everyone wants to use filters and special processing techniques to arrive at the most unusual presentation.

Yeah; someone once dubbed me an experimental retoucher and I said, that works. lol

I see no reason not to embrace Ansel Adam's philosophy to it's most extreme. lol

I am not sure what Ansel Adams has to do with stacking images or typo plots. About all he did was dodge and burn.
