Manual-focus would be just fine. I need a lens with a 52mm filter size, and a minimum focus distance under 0.65 feet.

Is there such a beast?

Yes, several.

Take a look at the 55-60 Micro section in this link.

Most should do that even if non-macro.

Why a 50mm? Usually macro lenses are longer to give more working distance which makes thing much easier (especially lighting).

Beware, that chart linked has close focus distance in meters, not feet.

It looks like essentially every single 55mm macro lens that Nikon has ever made will work.

I don't have to worry about working distance.

0.65 feet is 0.198 meters, so only one listed in the chart will do, and barely.

Oh well, off to try something else. Thanks.

Use an extension tube for closer focusing.

Also, are you sure about the distance? e.g. is it from the front of the lens, or the image plane, or nodal point? They are all different.

You say working distance doesn't matter, but it needs to focus in a very short distance...so I am a little confused. 1:1 on a any focal length is going to yield basically the same size of subject in frame, only the compression of the scene will be different. Do you need the subject larger than 1:1 on the sensor?

You did't say weather you were using FX or DX... If your shooting DX the 40mm Micro has a very short focus distance, and It's sharp.

He also didn't say if he's shooting a 'scene' at all. Could be flat work.

Flat work. Yes, extension tubes are the next step.

Then you definitely want a macro lens with a flat field of focus .
