Very nice example of this classic Nikkor zoom with a Dandelion memory chip allowing use of P, S, A and M exposure modes compared to normal Ai/Ai-S lenses that only allow A and M modes. It also provides precision control up to 0.3 stops of the aperture setting similar to "G" lenses via the camera's command dial. Simply set the aperture to f/22 and change apertures with the camera's command dial. The image file will display the correct f number and 25 mm focal length regardless of zoom setting since there is no electronic coupling to the zoom ring.
Performance:
IQ is equivalent to prime lenses from center to edge by stopping down just 1 stop to f/5.6 to improve contrast. Distortion and corner fall off is better than many current Nikkor zooms as this lens was made in the 1980's before the days of digital compensation of these defects. While there is no DOF scale, the red IR marks on the barrel are equivalent to a DOF at f/11 for the marked focal lengths if you want to determine hyperfocal setting.
Condition:
>Glass surfaces are free of any coating marks, scratches or internal haze. There are a couple of internal tiny specks of black paint (?) that have no effect on imaging.
>Mechanics are without issue. Nicely dampened action of both focusing and zoom rings for buttery smooth action. Aperture ring moves smoothly with good detents.
>Barrel cosmetics show some light surface abrasions in one area to the semi-gloss finish as pictured but there are no dents, dings or de-blackening to the base metal.
Function of Dandelion chip works well on M, A, P and S exposure modes on all metering modes. The aperture displayed by the camera accurately matches the lens diaphragm when checked with the DOF preview. However, I did find it necessary to set the exposure compensation to either +0.3 or +0.5 (depending on your camera's custom setting of EV increments) to match the exposure of my other AF Nikkors. This slight underexposure with the Dandelion chip is widely reported by other users from what I've researched on the matter. If desired, the chip can be removed as it's simply glued with epoxy to the back of the rear cover. It is a self-contained unit without any internal connections unlike Nikon CPUs in AF lenses.
Included with the lens is a Hoya HMC Skylight filter, caps, pouch, reprint of Nikon instruction booklet (English only) and Dandelion programing instructions if you want to change to focal length designation or access it's other features. Shipping $13 via Priority USPS in CONUS. |
